Hello All,

I am looking to get a few things cleared up.

I have a few local small businesses asking me about SEO and Im really not an expert or much of an SEO guy at all.

Heres what I would like to know, When building a html site from scratch what are the factors I need to look into that create a "google friendly" SEO optimized site. How should it be structured? Elements for SEO? How many pages? Etc...

The other thing I would like to know are what are the elements of SEO that will hurt your page in reference to designing the site...such as using flash? etc...

Thanks alot for the help!

    In order of priority..

    ON-PAGE
    1. META title tag - include main keyword in it.
    2. META description tag - include main keyword in that.
    3. Sprinkle your target keyword and related keywords liberally into your content.. Keep it natural and never over-optimize.
    4. Unique, original and good content is key.
    5. Clear, easy navigation for your visitor.
    6. Structure your site into silos (categorize your main themes)
    7. Use H1 tags with your keyword in it.
    8. Use ALT tag with any images on your site.

    OFF-PAGE
    1. Quality backlinks over quantity.
    2. Vary your anchor text.
    3. Keep all backlinking natural (no patterns).
    4. Utilize social networks to creat a buzz.
    5. Utilize RSS feeds for getting the word out there about your pages.
    6. Don't get involved in bad linking schemes
    7. NEVER link out to bad sites.

Think of it as a way of keeping your site organised into hierarchical themes. With your main theme at the top of the tree and all your silos (categories) are sub themes of that.

For example, if your main theme was "Fish", your sub-themes could be "tropical fish", "sea fish", "freshwater fish".. These sub themes can be thought of as silos and all internal links within those silos will help to boost the relevance of your site in the eyes of Google.

I cover this in great depth in my Adsense 101 bootcamp..

          On page SEO
You need to focus where to put your keywords on your page, the title, h1 , specially meta keywords and meta description. your selected keywords must be appear at least once in these categories to indexed by search engine, and same keywords must appear once in your content or article in every 50 or 60 words. then you must put , privacy policy, about , contact us page to rank higher in search engine. once you done your on page seo than you have to do some off page seo.

          Off page SEO
You need to get back links as much as you can , specially from high ranked sites.
write some articles with quality content and submit into major article directories like ezine articles ,go articles etc
get back links from social web 2.0 sites , like squidoo, tumbler , bloger , twitter etc specially hub pages. but articles must be unique. submit your site in D moz directory.

If you do all those things perfectly what i have mentioned above , believe me no one can stop you to be on the first 5 search results on any search engine and on the top if you do some video marketing, that would be great .

          Good luck.

Local seo is mostly about optimizing your location. You can start at Google's Local Business Center and work your way up from there.

The basic idea is to acquire as many references from important sites as you can. Although a link can be considered a reference it is not always the case. Usually references are snippets that mention your business name in close proximity to either your address or your phone number.

I recommend paying close attention to the seomoz guys as they are pretty good at local and I've learned a ton of stuff from them.

Be careful when using Flash on your site because Google can't see anything inside the flash file....the good old rule normally applies that ugly sites rank great because they are mostly all text...just be sure to use your alt img tags and so forth....

Make a list of keywords your site is targeting and check the competition on that keywords.
