The Downside of Outsourcing link building.

First let me say that we all need outsourcing at some point in our IM lives and there are many good high quality outsourcers. However after speaking with some people who PMed me recently I thought it would be useful to explain how and when outsourcing can be a bad thing. Perhaps we have the desire to outsource too much.

You need to understand that everyone is trying to make as much money as they can and outsourcers often competing on price are no different.

When placing links it can be critical that you get the most bang for your buck. From what I have seen recently with my own eyes many outsourcers take a shortcut that can dramatically reduce that bang and I wonder if thats one of the reasons why people are reporting their linkbuilding campaigns falling flat.

First, You NEED to ask and check that when an outsourcer leaves a link for you on a page that he is only leaving your links. If to save time he (or she) is droping several links on one page then he is diluting the juice that that link will give you. I've now seen pages where multiple links are being left on a page. Sometimes as many as six and seven or more and obviously not for the same venture. These are not front pages with Lots of juice to begin with. Dividing them up just waters out the effect especially on blog commenting where there are hundreds of people doing the same.

Second, You need to know whether your outsourcers have high integrity. It seems evident that some outsourcers use backlinks from your portfolio on other sites. I'm not going to get into specific outsourcers and why I suspect that but iF you have some backlink sites that you use because they are not being over run by other users going ahead and employing the wrong outosurcer can totally defeats your purpose. Your links will get into general circulation

Third, alot of outsourcers just don't take the time (and why should they really) and leave backlinks in such a way that they are likely to get Identified as spam and removed. Never expect a third party to take as much care for your business as you would.

So be careful out there and maybe your link building success will come back. Especially when you have some special links. Keep them to yourself and take a minute or two to place your own link. This is a critical part of your business and you are the one that cares the most about it.

Thanks for sharing. There are definitely some bad apples out there that do a horrible job link building and people need to be careful.

Well I wrote it in part because of all the reports of not having success with link building. I decided to test out link building with a new domain and did very well but I didn't outsource it. A high level of links remained and just 30 moved me on the front page. Later fell to position 14 where I made it set because the site isn't even finished yet.

So maybe how you oversee the process makes a difference.

I've been doing a lot of backlink searches the last week or two as I investigate ranking on some of the newer mini sites that have been going up. After tracing the backlinks of a couple hundred sites, I'm beginning to develop a fairly defined paradigm of the current state of the art in backlink building.

It appears that the backlinkers are often just randomly scattering links. They also often tend to use the same "Hi, how are ya?" introduction that makes them easy for me to target and examine. I don't know for certain, but I suspect this may be the result of cheap backlinking.

A backlink for a pet products website that is placed on a steroids for weightlifters forum may not provide the greatest juice, so even though you pay for 500 pr 4 to 8 links, only a small portion of those may be pertinent.

I've also found many sites that are top 10 with less than a dozen well placed links. Other sites in the top 10 have had 1500+ links that are all over the map.

    Quality counts.

I have been outsourcing links for a while... I would agree that the integrity level of the link builder remains one of the top things I look for... I have now refined a good working list, for different tasks, for who I will outsource a task to. I have found this works well, but it was only after time and money being wasted on the wrong people...

Personally I refuse to outsource link building for many reasons. Just gotta pull up them sleeves and invest a lot of time and effort, but should be worth it in the long run!

IT can be done well and is by some services but some just use automated tools and do a blast. I'm not against some automation but i've yet to see a totally automated system leave quality and I've seen alot of them.
