Uppercase/Lowercase Canonical URL issue

Hey guys & gals,

I have a unique question that I think would fall under a 'canonical URL' issue. Here goes:

I have a website that uses an IIS server, and the URL strings are not case sensitive. For example, you could load the following different versions of my pages with the same content appearing:

  • mysite.com/widgets
  • mysite.com/Widgets
Checking my ranking reports over the last few months, my search rankings have been very volatile. Sometimes I'll be up near page one, sometimes I'll drop down to Page 10. Additionally, I've noticed that the highest ranked version of the page that is being displayed in the search results will show different versions of the uppercase/lowercase depending on what date i pulled the report.

There are inbound links built to both versions of the page, although most go to the all lowercase version. Additionally, i know my site gets traffic to both versions.

In this case, would implementing a 301 re-direct to the all lowercase version of this page hopefully help stabilize my search engine rankings and solve the potential canonical issue?

Thanks in advance to all who reply
#canonical #issue #uppercase or lowercase #url
