Checking competition in local search

I've never really got into doing any type of SEO myself. The little i have done, when i have been checking the amount of exact competiting pages to gauge how difficult it will be to rank for a keyword i have always search by placing my keywords in quotes. However i was watching a video online the other day and this guy was saying to search for with the word allintitle as a prefix eg

allintitle: keyword

He was of the opinion that a keyword rich domain and a few backlinks per day would have a site with less than 50 000 competing pages ( when searched allintitle: keyword) ranking in the top ten pretty quickly even within days no less than one month.

I would apreciate it is any of you SEO experts out there could clarify this.

Thanks in advance

For low competition keywords and phrases, I would say this is true. It does not take all that much to rank well for keywords with little to no competition.
