Anchor Text - Long Tail Keywords

I'll build a little background. Standard backlink building involves the use of Link text. This causes the search engines to associate >link text< with the "url" site. So lets say you're doing greeting cards and you use "greeting cards" as your link text, obviously it associates with the combination of those words.

Now I've heard that long tail keywords are better to use but I lack a lot of understanding of website design so I was curious about something.

Using the same greeting card example, lets say your keyword was funny birthday greeting cards.

Does that mean you're gaining association with searches involving all 4 words?

funny birthday cards
funny greeting cards
funny cards
birthday cards
birthday greeting cards

So that a large number of backlinks involving >funny birthday greeting cards< would help to move you up in the SERPs for all of the above searches?

    Good question.

I remember a similar question being asked here a few months ago. I recently tried to locate the thread but couldn't find it.

From what i remember reading there was no consensus. I hope some of the forums link building experts notice this thread and comment.

The main reason I'm asking is I've got a good niche and I'm using Angelas' WSO for some backlinks. I have a good long tail keyword that will encompass most of the search terms I want to be a part of and that matches my site nicely. Would be nice to do it that way rather than go through the backlink building 6-7 times to catch all the permutations.

From my experience you need to provide backlinks with anchor text for each longtail you want to rank for. You'll always get "freebies" that you'll rank for without even trying, but you probably won't rank for various combinations of your main anchor text very high without doing anything. Especially if they have any sort of competition whatsoever.

If your links text was "funny birthday greeting cards" then you would get credit for a link with all the keywords...

      funny birthday greeting cards
      funny birthday cards
      funny cards
      funny greeting cards
      greeting cards
      birthday greeting cards

      ...and so on.

It's best to vary your anchors though, so don't get all your links with that same anchor just because it gets you more bang for your time.
