Several of my sites taken a hit

Several of my sites have lost their rankings for the main keyword.

The only 2 things they have in common is they are hosted on same hosting package and were optimised the same way using article submission, social bookmarking, web 2.0 pages, AMA & UAW.

The rankings held steady for 6 months then about a week ago just vanished.

I have had this happen to sites before and I usually dont worry as they usually come back. It is just worrying that it has happened to several of my sites at exactly the same time.

I am wondering if it is all the spun content I have submitted to various sites.

Anyone else had several sites drop in rankings over last couple of weeks?

My sites are holding strong....probally just doing the Google Dance right now...if all sites are using the same technique then it might be the method if Google de-indexed your sites all on the same ip.

Quick question, are they all linking to each other/in a similar niche?

Many times Google's spiders will recognize when sites that are all linked to each other and hosted on the same IP block it will downgrade the power of their links eventually as it dances in the ratings. Don't know if this is the case but can be if they are all interlinked and cross promoting each other!

None of the sites interlink. Sites are not de-indexed, they have just been sent to hell for some reason.

Don't want to sound alarming BUT same thing happened once (3 years ago??) to some of my sites and so far all of them are in G's page 6.

Whatever I do, they don't move. Even updating them daily

So, all the best and hopefully it's just a random fluctuation.

Let us know how it goes.

I think some sites which are linking to has removed your sites link thats why your sites go down in ranking.

I think the way they dissapeared at same time (25th march) is suspicious.

About that time my webhost were having problems and I couldn't get into my cpanel. I am wondering if another site on server (these sites on shared hosting) did something dodgy and now google doesn't like the IP address.

I am thinking of transferring them to my dedicated windows box but not sure if that will help. I have always believed that Google didn't discrimate against IP's as this would have too much collateral damage to innocent sites.

It's jarring me as there are several sites now ranking above me with just 1 or 2 backlinks pointing at them and I have built hundreds of quality links to these sites over the last 6 months. Until the 25th they had been ranking first page for 4-5 months.

I'm going to give it another week and if it hasn't come back try updating the content and building some more links.

Edit: Sorry for typo, I meant 25th Feb (this post was made on 3rd march)

I feel your pain, 2 of my sites were page 1 on Google say position 3 or 4 and climbing

They have dropped off never to return and I build at least 2 quality backlinks to both every day all year round

Both of them have held their position on BING (not that that means much)

I now drive traffic to them via PPC

Not sure if this question is welcome here and I apologise if it isn't, but if IP is an issue would posting some from different proxies improve this issue, or does google penalise for that, too?

Have you checked to make sure none of the sites have been hacked. I've seen a htaccess hack that reroutes search engines to adult sites, but regular visitors still see the site. The hack artificially inflates the PR of the adult sites, but can really hurt the ranking of a regular site.

Had that happen too - Jan 18th 2010 ... it scared the heck outta me too. Went to page 100 from page 1. for like 3 weeks too. Not even in the top 1,000 results. Was a brutal hit. Now its back stronger than ever.

Thought it might have gone thru a manual review - not sure. I kept the faith and kept the links coming though - as I had time. I rarely have time anymore to even link my own stuff with all the projects on the workbench.

PM me if ya want to chat ... using LFE by any chance?

Use websiteoutlook.com to check your domain. The Ip won't have been updated there yet. Then check it against the Ip you're on now. But if you were having problesm with your site it is normal for your rankings to disappear for a few days until Googlebot regains the same level of access it had before.

      Just curious...

Have you checked to see what Googles cache has.

I had this happen one time and it was hard to regain my positions til I figured it out.

If your server was unaccessable for a period of time(off and on) then google bot could have caught it at a time that it records and caches your page.

I had to resubmit my site maps and rss feeds before it replaced the errored cache. After I got that finally done and the cache refreshed...I gained my positions back.

      It was quite frustrating.

It felt like a month but I looked at date of first post to remind me and thought it was february. The american backwards date thingy tricked me. So its actually been about a month.

    Good News!!

Yesterday I checked google and my site was at #5 for its main keyword.

Then today I check again and its now at #1 for the main keyword!

I got fed up with it and just ignored it, these rankings came back almost 2 months later with absolutely no intervention on my part.

You've been rumbled. But you have a chance to make things right.

        Think of it this way.

If Google let you stay ranking and your competitors see that you are using those tactics they'll be wondering why the spam team aren't doing their job.

However people do grey hat all the time and this happens all the time and Google have outlined ways on their blog to rectify the issue.

It's in their latest post about blog commenting. It basically says remove your links that you don't feel are deserving of any Google love.

This way your site looks good both in Google's eyes and in your competitors.

Even so check what ranks for "**** Berry" and you can think why do I even bother abiding by the rules?

(I stand corrected by your experience of the rankings rising to the top again but I would really like you to keep this updated and keep us all informed of the future of these rankings?)

How has he been rumbled? What is wrong with the link building techniques he used? I thought article marketing and social bookmarking were ok.

I also agree that sometime website ranking dance at Google end due to which many of website owners got worried. Now according to your last comments I think now your site is in a good ranking at Google end.
