WordPress Install vs. Squidoo: Which Has Higher PR?

Hello Warriors,

I am curious if I install the WordPress script on my own hosting server (as opposed to just opening an account at their website) if it will have as high of a page ranking as a service such as Squidoo or Blogger etc. I realize it may need to age for a month or two if I install it myself, but if I keyword optimize my page, and domain name I am curious if it is possible to rival the 6, 7, or 8 PR so commonly enjoyed by Squidoo, etc...

Please let me know if anyone has any insight on this question...

Thanks & best regards,

Randall

In order to make this as simple as possible, and I may leave alot out that someone else wants to take more time to explain.. PR is PAGE RANK.. Not SITE RANK.

What that means is that Squidoo does have a page rank of 8, but that is the index page of squidoo. But, Laser Hair Removal Centers has a page rank of 0. So, PR is different for every page (or lens in this case) of squidoo.

So, yes you could build a lens and make the effort needed to build up PR. Or, you could install Wordpress on your own site and use the same effort to beef it up.

This is a short answer to a short question. There is still a place for things like Squidoo and Wordpress.com, but it depends on your strategy and your goal which you did not get into. But, I hope that helps you some.

      Kayelex,

Thanks for taking the time to reply with the info! SEO is not my strong point, but as you well know it needs to be one of the tools in my marketing arsenal. I didn't understand that there was a difference between site rank & page rank.

In short I guess I am asking if I created a well optimized page for 'under water basket weaving' using Wordpress which I have installed on my own server will it raise as high in the rankings compared to creating the exact same page on the well established, high site ranked www wordpress.com blog website? If they went head to head which is stronger - or does it even matter?

I am in the process of building several Squidoo lens to support my main sites for the backlinking. Just a little tip I picked up from reading this forum.

I haven't published one of them yet, but in a week or so I plan to turn on the first one.

I've learned so much from this forum, I'm running out of enough hours in a day.

      Hi Randall,

While kayelex gave you some good advice, let me clarify it even more for you.

Search engines don't rank websites, they rank web pages. They don't assign PR to websites they assign PR to web pages. The don't index websites, they index web pages.

While Squidoo's Home page may have a great deal of link juice, it doesn't help you at all unless you get a backlink from there. It doesn't matter which website your page is on, it only matters how well you have optimized and promoted your web page.

The only advantage that you might see from a Squidoo lens is that you are part of a community and if you become well known and well liked within that community you may get a great deal of traffic and perhaps backlinks from that community. If you manage to get your lens featured on a highly ranked Squuidoo page that would also be a plus. In the absence of those links you have absolutely no SEO advantage with a Squidoo lens.

You can build a following on your own hosted website or as a member of a community like Squidoo. There are advantages and disadvantages regardless of which method you choose. With Squidoo you become a member of a community, you don't own anything and you could be kicked out. With your own domain you own it but you must join other communities or build your own.

If you are clever, you will figure out how to do both in a symbiotic relationship where each page supports the other.

          Yeah Don, you nailed it.

I'll add only that if you have a good niche lens, you
may not need as many backlinks as someone else.
I have a PR4 lens with less than 10 backlinks. For some
reason squidoo loves it, and it has rubbed off on google.

There is much to be said about squidoo and google.

But that said, it is what YOU do to a site that actually matters.

        ^This.

At the end of the day, it's always best to own your work. Your Lens could be snatched up from under you, not to mention all their restrictions and advertising.

That being said, they definitely have their place when it comes to building links to a "money site."

What it really comes down to is if you're willing to cough up the ~$9 for the extra control and potential.

I'v heard Matt Cutts from google said Wordpress' new version is Really doing well in SERPS/SEO. And also if you visit Outsource to Freelancers, IT Companies, Programmers, Web Designers from India, Russia, USA, and more - oDesk, There are some clients looking for Wordpress Developers. From there, I'm sure you already have the idea which is which.

You may have a better chance of outranking a wordpress.com blog page with your own self hosted wp blog because - you might beable to secure the secret weapon - a keyword rich domain name.

I think you could do an interesting test with this - to establish - what many believe is the "authority" value of established - popular domains that google has with sites like wp.com and squidoo. Some refer to this serp/algo value as Trust Rank.

But i digress ... you could.

      register underwaterbasketweavingworld.c0m

      and then setup

      underwaterbasketweavingworld.wordpress.c0m

Put the exact same content and site plugins - if allowed on wp .c0m

Then throw 100 or 200 profile backlinks at both. On your profile pages put 1 backlink to your self hosted wp page and 1 link to the wordpress.com hosted page.

My money is on the wordpress.com outranking your self hosted site in most all instance - except where your domain name IS THE KEYWORD PHRASE. If your self hosted url isnt the keyword - all else being equal the trust rank and authority of wordpress.com will likely win in the SERPS.

Hope that helps and doesnt confuse.

      All the best,

      Steve

Thanks for the great insight. I was of the same persuasion about all else being equal that the wordpress website would outrank the stand-alone with all else being equal. I got a lot out of everyone's posts here and really appreciate the wisdom handed down.

        Kind regards to all,

PageRank should be the least of your concerns. Please remember that Google ranks PAGES not sites.

EXAMPLE: The reason Wikipedia pages rank well is not because Google likes Wikipedia. Wikipedia pages rank well because that individual Wikipedia page has more quality links, has better and more highly optimized content and is updated more often than the other competing pages... Simple as that [Period]

Let me add something else to my old post above, since
this was recently dug back up.

We usually have a squidoo to go along with a dot com.

One lens PR4, ranks numero uno on google for highly
      ranked term.

The corresponding dot com same PR4, with many more backlinks and
      updating, ranks about 30th.

So, there ya go! A real world example comparing a dot
      com with a squidoo lens.

I never discount squidoo. Ever. It took me 2 weeks to get my
latest lens indexed. That's about 13 days longer than it used
      to.

I couldn't have asked for a more apples to apples example. I realize it is a little late, but thanks for the feedback!
