myth or fact on same word anchor text?

I guess one of my biggest mental blocks right now is getting past some information I've read from a variety of sources, and it's in relation to using anchored text for backlinks.

The site I'm working on has 1 core keyphrase, and 4 sub-category keyphrases related to the core. A design promoted by the 30 day challenge course.

What I've read is by using the same anchored text to point back to your site, Search Engines consider this abnormal and it shouldn't be done. Instead, it is recommended to use a variety of anchored text words/phrases to point back to your site.

I understand the theory behind it, but this is where I'm stumbling.

I want the site to rank for a specific keyword phrase, and I feel by using a variety of different anchored text it derails the mission and goal.

The core keyword phrase I have consists of 3 words, so there really isn't much variety I can add to it.

For illustration purposes, let's say the keyword phrase is "big blue widget".

In theory you could use something like:
big blue widget
big blue widgets
big blue widget review
big blue widget reviews
purchase big blue widget
etc.

Because the core phrase is in the anchored text, is that sufficient enough or is it ok to simply use "big blue widget" as the anchor text on all articles published and backlinks you may create?

im your targeting to rank in specific keyword..you can work it out well by focusing on it..
long tail keywords is much easier to work out than the shorter one

Don't worry about using different keywords on your anchored text.... I don't personally do it and I don't see there is a problem.

It is always recommended to use the anchor text for creating backlinks. In addition, I would say you can also use the long tail keywords which have great prospects in terms of conversions....

I personally always use same word phrase for anchor text. There is no need of variation.

If you use big blue widget reviews instead big blue widget, You will get some improvement in ranking for big blue widget also but not so much as you will get with the exact phrase.

Varying anchor text to avoid a penalty really only comes into play with big link building campaigns that might trigger "Google Bombing" algorithms. If you aren't building 1000's of links a month in a competitive niche you probably don't need to worry about it from this aspect.

However, varying anchor text and landing page gives you a chance to grab low competition long tail terms that point to specific pages on your site. In other words, don't anchor everything using "big blue widget" to the index page of bigbluewidget.com but link to internal pages and use targeted long tails as anchors. This will help increase traffic to your internal pages and improve the cooperative SEO of all pages on your site.

Depends on the amount of backlinks but varying would be good. Make sure you place the main anchors on your strongest links tho.

I personally believe it to be a myth. I don't diversify my anchor text much at all and I haven't had any problems.
