Anyone with any experience in this arena and whether the rankings have been negatively or positively affected?

Google brings about really mixed results.

Depends, usually they're good but if you pay for them and you get caught might not be so good.

I'm curious about this as well. I've been reading up and I've gotten all kinds of contradictory answers. I know paying for links is bad, but I'm curious about the kind of SERP effect sitewide links have.

I prefer a home page link or a blog post to a sitewide link.

No proof that sitewides are harmful but too many of them can look spammy.

This is one reason that I do not offer sitewides on any of my directories.

I think sidewide links are pretty good links. I wish I can get one with main page of PR7-9 + hundreds of pages indexed for my SEO contest I joined. But it couldn't find any with high PR for cheap hehe..

They are good but should only be part of the overall link building process. I believe Aaron Wall's site has link tools that show overall links and amount of links from different domains. Both are important, it's not normal to have 5000 links pointing to your site from 2 domains, you want to look as natural as possible.

If I had to offer advice I would say get site-wide from sites that are related in topic / theme. Makes more sense to have "Blogroll" type links with related than some random site that has good PR.

If they are in the footer in particular they are not good. generally they are going to be weak across the board compared to in content links

I don't think sitewide links can really harm you simply because you cannot control who might link to you from their blogs this way. If it can harm you then may of your competitors would have resorted to this way.
