Subdomains from an SEO perspective

Hi there

I was just wondering, if I implement a keyword phrase that I have researched as a subdomain, example :

my-keyword-phrase(dot)mainsitedomain(dot)com

Is that likely to make an upset, even though I am planing to use my keyword phrase in description , title and strategically in my blog posts and other venues where I am gathering backlinks.

Thing is, I have a wasted domain that someone else has bought and am wondering if I should just ditch it entirely and rather get a new one, I am aware that keeping domain names the shortest possible is best practice but anyhow , perhaps I am just curious too.

I have used my keyword phrases as sub-domains on a few domains and managed to get them ranking for the keyword.

you can create sub-domain names using your keywords, it is very powerful and especially if you link them all back to the main domain.

I have several hundred sites under sub-domain names and have been doing this for years..

You can actually even get sub domains that can rank higher than the main domain (I did).

Look at wordpress and blogger - everything on those are subdomains.

Anyway, your only possible downfall is if you decide to sell a site by itself down the road.

If you are planning to never sell it, then you can make sub-domains up the wazoo.

Thanks for clearing that up folks, I deduced so but wanted to make sure. I have seen plenty of succesful websites using subdomains too. Optimizing a site has so many other factors and my opinion is that making the domain name as short as possible just makes a better visual impression on the user but hey, with IM we are used to long names. Thanks again dudes.

I came across PriceGrabber recently when doing research for my text savings website, and realized that they put their categories in subdomains as well; ironic that I found this post, thanks guys.

Sub-domains are great for SEO purposes. In many ways they are treated like a separate domain, the most important of which is that you can optimize each sub-domain apart from the main site.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

I've converted one main domain into multiple subdomains. That strategy can save my buck. and google indexed well. in case your goal not to sell your domain, multiple subdomains is smart way to make money

I completely agree with several in that sub-domains rule. You can have a lot of fun with sub-domains and control more keywords quicker.

As Jill mentioned (*great point*) ... there may come a day where there is an issue if you wish to sell the sub-domain by itself. Unless, of course, you want to build the value of the entire domain and sell it for a lot more.

Your main domain value suppose to support your sub domains. But as you are describing that your main domain does not have any content I presume that it would not have any value(in search engines) even. I do not feel that it can benefit ou in any way.

IMO you should work on your main domain first and ultimately your subdomain will also get benefited.

You can either create subdomains for folders with keywords, both can be effective for SEO.

Of course if your domain weight is good and you are adding a key phrase as your subdomain then your subdomain must get a power boost.
