I recently had a nice victory in my never-ending cage fight with Mr. Google. I optimized a page for a three keyword combination of keywords, say, X Y Z. What I did was align my file name, title, header, keyword density, etc. And, miracle of miracles, I landed on p. 1, the no. 1 spot. Yes, that was beautiful and one of the few successful landings I've had on planet Google.

Here is my question: how important do you guys think the file name was to all of this? I named my file X_Y_Z.aspx to be exact. Do you think that had anything to do with my success? Or did I just catch the gods in a good mood?

  • You said you aligned your file name, title, etc etc... so did you change all that or was the file name the ONLY thing you changed?

Guys: I changed multiple things including the filename. So, admittedly, it might not be the file name. But that's exactly why I was seeking advice: I don't really want to change the file name if I don't have to. It's kind of a pain in the neck since I think sometimes the original page might be cached in Google and sometime I have to change links on other pages to that page, etc.

So that's why I'm asking, "How important is the file name to SERP?"

I decided to post this on the G forum and their response was that file name does help a little, i.e. it's just one of my factors that can contribute somewhat.
