necessary to bookmark every post?

Is it good to bookmark every new page or post on my own site? Or is it a little overboard? should I just let the search engines find pages/posts on my site?

For static pages, I let the search engines find them via my XML Sitemap. Seems to work well. Blog posts they seem to find on their own pretty well.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

I agree with Dennis....I've updated my blog pretty much every day for about 6 months now and rarely (if ever) is a post not indexed the same day.

Static pages on my site tend to get picked up between 3-7 days on average....I think that is largely because I try and add a page or two per week to the site. I haven't set up a site map as of yet either.

how about for backlinking though? Submitting a new post to say 40 different bookmarking sites...a lot of backlinks no?

Yes. This is how you end up ranking for long tail search terms. By taking this simple step you can double or triple your search traffic.

And you don't think it would be too much to bookmark to 40 different sites for every new post i make? Aright, I'm all in.

Would this long tail bookmarking effect apply to forums? I have several articles of my own and ones written by my members that would be good quality indexing fodder but I never did it, assuming it wouldn't affect things much because they are just pages on a forum's back boards.

I would suggest bookmarking each post if you intend to build an authority site. If you will only ever have 10 - 20 posts I would not bother.
