I'm wondering if anyone has any tips as to which are the "Essential (Free) Wordpress Plugins" that are 'Must Haves" when building your site to help you achieve the best possible search engine rankings for Organic Google searches

All in one SEO pack is a good start.

I use Jeff Johnson's free traffic getting plugin too - which uses all in one SEO pack as one of the components.

Google will show you where they live.

yes as some have already said:
    All in one SEO pack.
    Google XML sitemap
    But I also like
    Future Calendar
It has a function that shows what dates have a future post scheduled in a calendar format, and makes it easy to change the current timestamp.
    Insights
Insights allows you to quickly search and insert information (links, images, videos, maps, news..) into your blog posts.

      I forgot to mention
      Pretty Link
Shrink, track and share any URL on the Internet from your WordPress website!

I use that all the time for my affiliate links

    Google XML sitemaps plugin.

WordPress always seems to do pretty well on it own in the search engines so I would say the above is all you really need IMO.

I second these plug-ins. And add...

    Auto Tag
    Ad Manager
    Google Analytics
    Taxt Widgets

    Hope this helps

I recommend Platinum SEO over All-in-One SEO because AIO has become annoying between constant bug fixes and the activation/donation nag screen.

I don't recommend using an XML site map plugin if you're on shared hosting. This plugin is a processor pig and can get your account shutdown, especially when you use it with autoblog scripts. As long as you have decent navigation in your theme you won't gain much from using this plugin anyway.

I do recommend the Dagon Sitemap Generator for mid-sized sites to improve visitor navigation. It isn't needed for smaller niche sites and I don't recommend it for high output autoblogs.

I recommend Yet Another Related Posts Plugin. This plugin can be very helpful in getting a double listing in Google.

The best SEO plugin is not requiring a plugin at all.

Start out with a theme that enforces good SEO practices and you don't need the bloat and processor drain of a bunch of plugins, all with potentially overlapping functionality.

At a minimum, your theme should...

    1) Allow you to create a keyword rich page title. This is THE most essential element to your site's SEO potential

    2) Allow you to create a post excerpt that can also be used as your page's meta description. This is what Google will use in the SERPS under your title and is your value proposition for your page.

    3) Automatically structures your post title in an H1 heading element.

    4) Creates a structurally sound page using semantically accurate xhtml and leveraging concise and validated css for presentation. This is the key to your site's speed and accessibility, which is a definite factor in your SERP according to Google.

Once you've got that down, if you need any runtime plugins, I'd be very surprised. At best, you might use Google XML sitemaps to gain a slight measure of control of how your pages are being indexed.

    Hope that helps.
