This thread isn't about whether we agree on the importance or validity of DMOZ. It is about how to get listed. A colleague of mine jumped in the rankings once he got listed. Coincidence? Who knows.
How many times has it taken you to get your site(s) listed in DMOZ? If it didn't happen the first time, how long did you wait, and what did you change the second time? I have applied 3 times now in 16 months, and still waiting. I do not have an affiliate site. It is a quality site pertaining to my line of work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can try and become an editor. But again it's just not worth all the effort to try and get that link.

I have DMOZ entries from "back in the day" and get almost no actual traffic direct from DMOZ. I do seem to get some legitimate ranking boost. But the place is a morgue and there are no real tricks. You need and editors address and you need to convince them.

Try to apply in the category where your site is related. A category which have several editors. I was an editor before and sometimes, I only visit my account every 3 months, then I left. If in the category you have chosen has only one editor then that would mean the chance is not that favorable to you unless that the editor is really focused.

Build a high quality site. Not an affiliate site, not an adsense site. A good old fashioned unmonetized info site. If you monetize it before you are accepted into DMOZ, you will never be accepted into DMOZ.

Have something unique, something that makes your site a useful addition. If there are hundreds of sites just like yours, you aren't going to get in.

This is the best advice I say. There are many other great places to get a solid backlinks. Yes, DMoz link is powerful but if you will concentrate too much on this only, you are losing many other opportunities to get backlinks.

Edit: You can contact a DMoz editor for more tips. Here is one: Digital Point Forums on Digitalpoint.

Press Release - I have one website that I submitted a press release for; some how it ended up on DMOZ and it was a sales page only site. I don't understand how that worked out but it did. The drawback was that DMOZ eventually must have figured it out and remove the site from their list but it lasted over a year and a half.
