How much effort to reach Google Page 1 for a given term?

Hello!

Is there a way to see how much effort it'd take to reach page 1 of google search for a given term?

For example, I have a 'stop smoking' blog that I want to rank high - page 1 or 2. How would I determine how much effort/how many backlinks it would take to beat a few other sites on there (like stopsmoking.net / whyquit.com)

ALSO: Is there a resource to see what page you're currently on in Google for a given search term? How can you tell if you're on page 5 or 500 without having to go through each page one by one?

Thanks so much for your help. You guys rock and I can't wait to grow with you all on these forums! =)

Try to target long tail keywords... I don't recommend 2 words kind of short tail keywords, they usually very competitive.

To track your URL ranking, try "Advance Web Ranking" - a powerful software that help you track your domain or url keywords!

Alternatively, try Market Samurai, it has built in keyword tracker.

Well how long it would take to reach the number one spot really comes down to the competition on the first page of Google.

Research each website on the top ten..

1] How many one way backlinks do they have pointing to their site....not only quantity but quality....if you check them out 9/10 the backlinks are junky spam links etc, use yahoo site explorer to check each site in the top ten......place this into the yahoo search bar:

      site:sitegoeshere

2] What's the PR of the competing sites? Anything under a PR 4 is beatable in due time....anything over that will take a longer time to beat out.

Time is equal to level of competition.....determine their strengths and weakness and out do their backlinks and pr and then you should beat them out in time......how long depends on the # of backlinks...if they have over a few thousand and your site is new then it will take a month or so....no real way of putting a timer on the whole process....really comes down to Google and your efforts.

      Best of luck

PS to check the ranking of a keyword in a search engine download rank checker from SEObook

And there is no way to check how many backlinks a given site has?

I'm trying to use Google, but "Link:website.com" doesn't work for me, for some reason

I use http://www.seocentro.com/ they have a great tool for that. Note: google won't show you all of your links. Everything is a "big secret" with them.

    Match and exceed....

What links does the site you are trying to beat have? Match those links, and then build a few more. I don't mean match the amount, I mean if they have a link on **xyz.com/blog, you go get a link on **xyz.com/blog ...until you have matched them link for link, and then keep building.

All you have to do to be on the 1st page of Google is to beat the site in the 10th position. You work your way up from there.

Traffic Travis has a pro version that shows how much competition for a given keyword phrase and rates the likelihood of successfully appearing on first page. ..come to think of it, theres a free version which should do the same as well.
