Literally two weeks ago I started my new blog. I have not even started promoting it.

dirtysmoke .com

It jumped to Google spot #5 it seems instantly for KW "dirty smoke". I expected that much. I figured it would take quite a few months to take #1 spot.

A few days later, I'm #1. Unexpected!

My age? Infant.
Backlinks? Maybe 1 or 2.
SEO? Newbie.
Content? Handful of blog posts.

So can someone please tell me how I beat the #2 spot which has SO much more backlinks, age, authority!? The answer to this question will help me with future projects.

Did you try to check with proxies what is a place on google for your domain?
Because Google remembered sites you visit so often and automatically expel them on the first place.

You may be looking at customised results from Google, showing you sites that you have visited often much higher than they actually are.

Either turn off customised results (default in Chrome), try the search using the GoogleGlobal plugin for Firefox (right click SERP page, show results in USA/UK etc) or use the Google Ad Preview Tool and adjust for your country.

Rank Checker and Rank Tracker will also give you a true 'uncustomised' SERP result.

If that is what's going on, you won't be the first Internet Marketer fooled by it.

BTW, is 'dirty smoke' a buying keyword?

How long does it happen ? If you are #1 in only 2 - 3 days, it 's usual. That's true if you are #1 in about 1 month.

If dirty smoke is a "keyword," it's not surprising.

What would be surprising if anybody in the real world
did a real search for that. I mean come on people.

Who would search for dirty smoke?

      Hmmmmm....
I predict in 15 minutes, this thread will rank #1 for
"who would search for dirty smoke"

      And the point is....?

Paul's smug response is right... Ranking #1 in Google doesn't mean a thing when just taken by itself.

Ranking #1 for a certain key phrase that people type into Google to search for something is what you are after, right?

So your blog is about "quitting smoking"...you should be worried about where you are ranked when someone types in "quitting smoking".

But actually, you shouldn't waste your time with worrying about that, because you won't rank for that keyword !! There's way too much competition. And the reason there is too much competition is because so many people search for it!

So the reason why you rank #1 for "dirty smoke", is because there is no competition from other website owners, because no one searches for it.

Maybe try to rank for a keyword like..."quit smoking today" or "quitting smoking methods" or... (long-tail keywords)

You hit it on the head. This keyword gets less than 55 searches a day for it and there is weak competition in the market.

You own the domain name with the keyword in it, and there's a lot of weight behind that, so that explains your questions.

Simply put, this is an easy market to crack and it's not directly tied to a niche or anything with high volume. Sorry!

    I've got you at #1

Not to burst your bubble but this might only be a temp ranking. Let's hope it's not.

Now I need to read your blog because I need to quit smoking. I'll read it right after I get back inside from smoking

No adsense? I can't help you earn a few bucks if you don't have ads for me to click on.

I was confused, I didn't see any ads for any thing you
      were trying to sell.

How are you motizing your blog?

Becos that keyword is not competitive and not really commercially viable. So your site will rank high even with little or no SEO effort.

You should look for keywords with commercial viability, with lots of searches and low competition, that is how you made money.

I wish you all the best.

You can always get to the top of google using a phrase no one else is using - but that's because no one searches for it, either.

Now work on the site so you rank well when someone searches for "stop smoking" or "quit smoking" and there is "tobacco addiction", "nicotine addiction", etc.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.
