Guaranteed Front Page Placement? Why Not?

I've been skeptical in the past about and SEOs that say they can give guarantees of front page placement because most of them are scammers that don't reveal that the front page placement they are talking about are for low traffic terms.

But the more I have thought about it and noticed the ease at which you CAN get a front page placement for some terms that actually CAN bring in decent traffic I am wondering if SEOs should be talking about guarantees.

Real guarantees for decent traffic keywords. Not guaranteeing for customer chosen keywords that are not realistic to rank high for.

Is not making guarantees (good ones not scam kind of claims) just something that people hide behind to push products or services that really don't work? or is making guarantees just going to confuse buyers that are not going to understand the terms of sensible guarantees (you actually have to follow the suggestions and do what is instructed etc).

Whats your opinion?

OK, and then what happens when Google changes the rules and the rankings change? That's why guarantees of ranking position in the organic SERPs are, in and of themselves, a sign to me of a shady SEO'er. No one can make that guarantee when they don't control the system that determines the outcomes. The best they can promise is that they have a handle on the current best practices, with the caveat that it can all go up in smoke at any moment.

Yes if that whats being guaranteed then thats shady and why I think a lot of reputable SEOs stay away but I wasn't really talking about lasting positions. I was more talking about getting a site on the front page not keeping it there through all changes.

I guess I have begun to think about this because probably the biggest scam of all is holding out a seo service and not having to show ANY result at all. Its flooded the market with alot of people claiming to be SEO experts and not having a clue.

I tihink an SEO worth his sauce can get a site ranked for some traffic terms if he knows what he is doing. Only however if he/she has input into the keywords targeted. Future proofing that placement is an entirely different thing .

      Thanks for you thoughts.

The guaranty would have to be relative, skewed, and
twisted. As in another thread, one could take xyandz.com
and rank it #1 for xyandz. And probably guarantee it. But
        what use would it serve?

Similarly, let's say car wax. You would not want to guarantee
that you could get that site #1. But you maybe could for
easy hand car wax, or hand car wax for cars in Florida, or
easy hand car wax for just washed cars, etc.

I think a guarantee should be avoided, as it makes SEO seem
like a rather silly business. We don't want to seem foolish
when someone here screams, "I rank #1 for penguins in bathing
suits, yippee!!!" There's too much of that nonsense going on.

For real, good, decent, everyday, common search terms, you
would not want to guarantee anything. There so many intangibles
that cannot be controlled by a person doing SEO.

Guaranteeing a decent SERP for some common terms, well, that
may be workable. You would then have to define a decent SERP
        for the given keywords/phrase.

But then you would need to think about drop offs, so how long
would your SERP be guaranteed for?

Opens up a big can of worms.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

          l

You know it. Hear you on that. Can of worms? I think thats what I am grappling with. right now the can of worms already opened up is that everyone claims to be an SEO expert and without any results criteria you see people getting ripped left and right.

If guaranteed page placement has baggage I guess it could be tied to some other metric though.
