I'm looking to dominate the 10x box for local search, ie: get my clients in that map box. Anyone know a way to do this?

I guess to add on to that, strong keywords where? Lots of people rank in those boxes with no websites at all.

    Hey Jason,

do not use a 800#...make sure it's a local number...
the closer to the center of town, the better you will rank...
Google weighs heavy in the citations...pay attention to them...
Create accounts for local & national search portal sites (yelp.com, merchantcircle.com, local.com, etc...)
*use the same format to set each up....business name, address, etc...
*use keywords in the business name...
Add as many categories as possible...it allows you to customize categories...use keywords if you can...
    Add photos & Videos...
    Add Coupons...
Use the website main page title in your business description...

do the same for Bing local & Yahoo local...

    Now get to work!!

The biggest factor, IMO, is citations. It's all about citations, citation, citations. Yes, you also need to completely fill out the Google biz directory listing (good keyword categories, coupons, pictures, video, etc).

To get everyone on the same page, a "citation" is the equivalent of a good backlink in terms of Google Maps/Business Directory. But a citation isn't a link, it is composed of a business' name and physical address. The more Google see that across the web, the better for your maps listing.

Where is Google going to see that?

    - business directories (like Yelp, Yellowpages, etc)
    - press releases
    - the business own website and contact and about us pages, etc

For startes, concentrate on those things (and the listing or profile itself) and you will begin to dominate.

In addition to what has already been said in this thread you need Customer Reviews. But DON'T fake it. Real customer reviews only! Encourage customers to write a review. List review websites on sales slips. Have a laptop in the store logged onto review sites and encourage customers to write one before they leave. Place links to review sites on the business website, Facebook page, etc. Ask for a review in your email sig file with a link to a review website.

Also build links to the LBC Profile Page and embed the Google map on various website. Social Bookmarking sites can help, but don't stop there. Embed the Map on the company's website. Make blog posts about the business and embed the map and/or place a link to the Profile Page. Make web2.0 pages such as Squidoo, HubPages, WetPaint, etc. and embed the map and/or place a link to the Profile Page. Then Bookmark all the blog post and pages you create (promote the promoters). Do this gradually over time.
