Duplicate content penalty for email text!

I don't just sit here and try to find things to stew about all day long; they just seem to find me. This one's been finding me quit often lately.

I go a couple days without checking one of my email accounts. I see some guru-dweeb has sent me an email on, say, Monday with a title something like, "Mike, The Secret Auto-Blogging Plan For $3,000 A Week". Now, I'm not going to open it in the first place because I know what it will contain. Junk, butt-lint, and affiliate links for the newest flavor-of-the-month product.

Now, the very next day I get another email from the guy with a title something like, "Oops Mike, broken link fixed!" If you were to open that email it would be exactly like the first one (which didn't have any broken links in it to begin with).

The guy explains that some subscribers complained that one of the links was broken in his first email so he fixed the link and blasted the damn thing out again. Come on dude! You're trying to convince me that you're this demi-god, super-affiliate guru and you can't even copy and paste a link into your emails! Don't you test them before you send them out?

I want to email the guy back and ask him if he's every seen the show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" Either, 1. you're not smarter than a 5th grader, or 2. you are just using a bull-sh*t technique to send the same promotion out to your list two times without looking like a spammer. Cut me a break. So I impose my own duplicate content penalty on these numb-skulls. I unsubscribe and get on a list where the person actually cares enough about me to give me some value from time to time.

And this leads into my next gripe. When I read an email saying that they have a free video showing me how exactly how I can make $5,000 a week or something like that.

I'm getting a hemorrhoid from hell from kicking myself in the ass every time I open one of videos only to find that it isn't an instructional video as promised, but a video opt-in page for some freakin' affiliate product. Again, that wastes my time and doesn't deliver what it promises. Again, unsubscribe!

Big tip: If you want me to trust you and have confidence in what you recommend to me, then don't lie to me right out of the gate in the title or content of your email. If you're unwilling to give me something of value from time to time, then don't expect me to order through your freakin' affiliate links.

Awesome post, well...I found it amusing.

I hear ya and boy it bugs me too.

What shocked me was I bought a really really good product from someone that actually delivered on the promise. Then I'm on this guys "update" list and for the next few weeks I get emails every single day promoting junk...much of it in competition with his own product which I thought was great.

First I'd want to treat any list with respect, second I'd really take care of those that had given me money to wind up on my list!

So now I've got yet another guy that I just can't trust. Too bad, the early romance was so good.

Mike - it sounds like you're on a few too many "wannabe" lists. You probably know more than the "marketers" sending you that.

I agree with you completely, that why unsubscribing can be such a beautiful thing. I especially like the ones where you get a place to enter your reason for unsubscribing.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

yep - the old "broken link" trick is becoming a bit over-used.

But I do have loads of fun watching those jokers scurry around trying to sucker each other.

    It's like marketing incest.

I have to warn you: I am old school and learned Latin

digitus, digiti - noun, masc = finger, toe
digitalis*, digitale, digitales - adj, m-f, n; pl

You should reply to those IMers with the immortal words of Cicero:
Quousque tandem abutere, [his name here], patientia nostra?

It is very disturbing, but that's what did the IM to promote their products. Sometimes spamming becomes super deadly weapon, especially for beginners, lol

    Mike,

I just want to confirm your thoughts on this.

If I want to use the super-effective high-powered money-generating get rich quick method of sending multiple emails, I need to make sure the first one REALLY has one broken link, the second one has a different broken link, and the third one gives you a video opt-in landing page as a gift for surviving all my broken links.

    Did I get it right?

If so, can I have the Preparation H?
