Whats the difference between cache and index?

Title asks the question. Been trying to figure out the difference between the two. I have a few certain important web 2.0 properties that have really old cache dates but here and there throughout Google I see more recent caches of newer posts to these web 2.0s.

Just wanting to make sure that my thinking is correct. My thinking is that a website that is crawled frequently will have a very current cache right?

    In theory, the two are not the same (you can read about cache on this url Google Cached Pages: What Are Cached Pages? - Google Guide )
    In practice, I find very little differences. Almost all indexed pages are also in the cache and vice versa.
    May be cache is a bit more difficult to get and gives an indication that a page is in 'good standing' with google.
    I use 'cache' as my main criteria for a link exchange (I refuse link exchanges when the back link is not in G cache)

    Greetings!

    In my opinion, Google takes a picture of each page, examines and caches (stores) that version as a back-up in the Database. The cached version is what Google makes use of to judge if a page is a good match for a searched query. Google index refers to getting website listed in the google's database index for SERPs.
