Do you think linking out to authority websites within your niche can aid your SEO and rankings ?

I tend to never link out to any other websites to keep all strength within the website.

What are your views guys ?

Thanks

Tom

You should link out when it make sense, Google seems to like "natural" site, when you reach certain PR, you need to link out to enjoy more Google traffic.

    Tom,

Yes, linking out to other sites is a good idea.

Just like kkchoon said, it helps you look natural.

If you look into the way Google originally modeled Pagerank, they used academic journals as their reference. While that's used mostly to explain why incoming links are beneficial, it also applies to outgoing. I'm not sure if you've ever read many academic papers but they're littered with references to the people who did the research their material is based on.

So feel free to link to high quality sites when it makes sense to do so on your blog (and not just using affiliate links). It'll help your rankings. Share the link love :-)

I think you actually have two questions there.

      1. Should you have external links
      2. Should you use "nofollow" on those external links.

The answers to both of those questions are debatable but I do agree that having some external links looks more natural. Using "nofollow" on those links I think is fine as well.

The problem with SEO questions like these is that what has worked for one site may not work the same for another site for any number of reasons so it is impossible to conduct exact experiments on things like this. That being said, my comments are based on MY personal observations for my sites only.

Once you reach a certain level of authority, I don't think it hurts (can't confirm it actually helps) you to remove the "nofollow" tag on external links and pass link juice to other sites.

If you are a brand new site, I would personally still recommend hoarding your link juice by using "nofollow" on all external links.

I hope that helps and good luck!
