SEO analysis

Hi,

i have a question on niche site SEO. I've found out, that "poker" is a very lucrative and overlooked (in SEO opinion) niche in my country. I am planning to make an informative site on this, like: news, rooms, video, forums, etc.
Local direct searches for "poker" in G are around 10k (which is a good number here) and similair 3-6 searches (poker rooms etc.) are somewhere in 5-10k monthly. Google shows around 450k local sites on this keyword.
The top5 of them have very easy beatable specs (links, pr and SEO).

I was like "WOW at last i have found the gold nugget!" at first, but now i am in doubts.. If the topic is very hot, everyone speaks about it around here and searches for it why it is so dull in google?

What pitfalls can this niche have and what did i overlook in my analysis?

      Yes it this, thats why i was so surprised when i found out that local searches are so high w\o any good results in output, and now i don't know if i am doing the right thing...
      Top5 sites have PR1-2 and under 500 backlinks.

      My plan:
      - make an informative site with Adwords\Niche affiliate links
      - build around 100 backlinks for a start
      - advance into some kind of social network.

      I did:
      - bought an old expired niche related domain *ccTLD
      - gathered some info\content for a start


      My next step would be creating a simple site with 5 categories with around 10 items\articles\videos\tutorials in each to see how i would rank in google.

      But know i am thinking if this idea worths my efforts, and my analysis is right, so wouldn't i just waste 2-3 weeks of my time on this, because it looks very good to be true..

        500 backlinks. That's a lot.

        Are you sure it's easy?

    Hi there

    If you have found a niche then well done, but poker is in my opinion saturated ive tryed to promote sites myself, and there are so many big competetors.

    The hard thing is gamblings sites are very hard to promote, as getting links can be hard as some sites will just not add adult or gambling links especially usa based sites.

    Also you need LOTS of traffic to get people to sign up, people are not daft and dont sign up on a whim like they do with a lot of sites, they are very carful with their cash.

    Although the good thing is you dont need too many signups to make some money, just very hard to do it consistantly, I evetually gave up as the costs involved in promoting these sites can be excessive.

    Is poker something you are passionate about?

    Would you come across as an authority on the subject?

    Would you be able to supply some good quality content, tips, hints, training, knowledge, insider secrets, strategies etc.....?

    Or are you just trying to make some money?

    When I started online I was told to 'go for something that you're passionate about'

    Does that not still apply?

    A 'Poker based' adsense site is just that.....and visitors will see it as 'just that' and will leave very quickly.

    This is not a critisism, rather a way to focus people on the fact that there is a good living to be made online (yes I do. yes fulltime, no not in IM) if you just follow the basic rules.

      I am interested in poker, but don't know much, although i have some friends that agreed to make unique content for this site.

      I am simply pissed of, i have made a few very nice sites, with user\seo friendly designs\unique content\navigation but eventually i was always beaten to the end of top 100 with all those other spammy and Black hat seo sites above me, so now i don't want to loose several months of hard work to find out that "keyword1-keyword2.keyword1keyword1.**" affiliate site with template on it has x100 better rankings than mine.         I rank #1 in google for around 10 good keywords/phrases and I haven't the faintest idea what most of the seo stuff you talk about even is.....

        If you can build a site that converts fairly well.....then you can worry about getting ranked and getting more traffic.(the best traffic for me is usually the easiest to get too)

        If a site doesn't convert then there is no need to get pissed off if you are beaten in the rankings.

        I would happily look over what you have so long as you don't mind brutal honesty. Don't send it if you don't want the truth though. I learn't early on to leave my ego at the door when it came to IM stuff.....and I had a BIG ego.

        What I now know is that none of us know anything really. We create and test and modify.......tons of failure (or 'results' as I have learned to call them) with sufficient good results to make the while thing worthwhile and in fact the most exciting thing I have ever done........
