I am new to this and I had a few questions about SEO and backlinking......I joined a site as an affiliate. They have almost 1800 backlinks. So do I need about 2000 or more to compete? Also if I use my affiliate url instead of a squeeze page will google even count those links or does that fall under duplicate content? Thanks in advance for any advice on this :-)

If you are trying to compete for the same keyword you will need a lot of links. How many links has to do with the websites PR that you are getting the backlinks from. I have seen site that have 400 links compete with site that have 2000.

If I understand your other question correctly. The link that the affiliate gave you is the link people click to buy the product you are selling. This link will not count. However, if people click on that link that you posted as a backlink and buy something you will get some money out of it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Stellar. You mentioned the affiliate link. I am an affiliate for a private company not clickbank so my url pulls up a carbon copy of their site not an order page. So their site is definitely SEO optimized I am guessing because they have almost 1800 backlinks and about 5 pages in the top ten for their main keywords. My thoughts because of this was to not do a squeeze page but just refer people to the affiliate link/site but I am not sure if that's a good idea and if it is.......and I get a bucketload of backlinks......since their site is already backlinked a lot and my site would be a copy of theirs, would that count as duplicate content or not? Does that make more sense about what my question is?

Build some quality pages around your niche and follow what "Marko.V" said and you should get good traffic...promoting affiliate link directly will not give you great results. Hope this helps.

No you don't need 2000 backlinks or more. If you are WP user, all you have to do is to install some WP plugins like:

    all in one seo
    headspace
    xml sitemap

Then, each day, seven days per week, you have to build backlinks on 2.0, social bookmarks, rss directories and if you have time you can also make some video and submit in video directories like: daily motion, youtube, blip.tv etc.

I am sure you will see very good results after 7-8 days of work on this principle.

Doesn't All in one SEO and Headspace accomplish the same thing? So I'd only need either one or the other?
