Let's say I gave birth today to a new born site...

How long should I wait until I start adding backlinks (maybe 5-10 a day)?

If you're in one of the same niches as me I recommend waiting at least a month, maybe two, and only getting 1 or 2 links a week. That way you'll be 'safe'.

But seriously, as long as you aren't doing massive link spamming, get as many as you can as fast as you can with a preference toward getting higher value links.

You can start immediately. Just make sure you do natural growth of backlinks

        What would you consider "natural"?

        Commenting? Yahoo Answers? Article Marketing?

Yeah, maybe I should just wait and see if my site build skills are so grand, that links just want to attach themselves to me???

      Thanks for the reply...!

wait 4 weeks before starting any aggressive back linking.. 20-30 a day for the first 4 weeks then start to increase it.

      Hi Avid,

I'm with bgmacaw, the longer you wait the better it is for us. I recommend that you wait at least 2 years, you just can't be too safe you know.

Seriously, the only way you can do it too soon is to start building links to pages that don't yet exist. And the only reason you would ever want to moderate your link building is if you are doing nothing but spam and you are trying to keep a low profile to avoid detection. Your spamming will almost always get detected and devalued eventually, so going slow doesn't benefit you all that much.

Alternatively you can build meritorious links and there would never be a reason to moderate that type of link building. Meritorious link building is simply following the principal of "attribution in exchange for contribution" (© Don Burk - All Rights Reserved).

Okay, so for clarification (because I'm a green-horn here) 20-30 is considered non-aggressive?

yes. This is the strategy I use for my own and clients new sites.

If you don't feel comfortable with that you can do less with around 10-15 a day.

        regards

        Steve

Also, make sure to diversify your link building.

            Natural? Aggressive? Diversify?

            Who makes this stuff up????

You need to build as many quality backlinks as quickly
            as you can. Period.

There is no maximum or wait time. The only people who talk
about such things are people who like linkfarms, etc., then
complain about getting de-indexed or something.

You cannot build enough quality backlinks quick enough.

I'd like to thank everyone for their input.

It seems I'm in need of a big education when it comes to backlinks. I'm searching this forum, but since you all seem like knowledgeable people, would you all be willing to recommend any basic resources?

              Thanks in advance...

I'm surprised no one said this before but the answer depends entirely on what niche you are in. If you have located some low competition keywords you may never have to do "agressive backlinking". Seriously some sites rank with relatively few backlinks for certain keywords. I had one two months back that took just 40 high quality backlinks to get on the front page. There are plenty of sites that rank for low competition keywords with a few hundred backlinks. If you are new then PLEASE - skip all the backlinking advice and get some good keyword research done first.
