Never tried building profile links before and read how many people were doing it so I decideded to at it to my link building strategy and started.

When to Technorati top 100 blogs planning to work my way down and make a profile in each blog with a link. Plan fell to pieces by the time I got to the 15th blog.

These are the problems I had
-blogs did not allow profiles
-profiles had no area to enter web url
-blogs shared common membership so only 1 profile for several blogs

In the end, i've got what may be 2 profiles with links.

This is obviously not the right way to build profile links so can some one please take pity on me and tell me what I am doing wrong

No it's not the right way. I suggest you use Angela links for a month or so to figure out how and where building profiles might pay off.

Or you can find them also, it's not so hard. There is a great ebook, called SEO footprints, explain everything necessary how to find those links ect.

Blogs generally don't allow user profiles. You can get profile links from forums and from Web 2.0 sites.

I suggest you outsource your links or buy a tool like vBulletin Bot. Makes it much easier.

you can try yourself to find forums with high PR.
First we need to know which forum engine allow signature links and these are SMF boards most SMF boards allow signature links but for example vbulletin in many times do not allow, also PHPbb forums many times do not allow signature links etc.
You can find smf boards with google with following query:
    "powered+by+smf" keyword
instead of keyword use most popular words for example go to
    Wiktionary:Frequency lists - Wiktionary
and see which are most popular words in that case you will find also SMF boards with highest PR. One more type of forum which allow signatures often are
invision power board forums for google use this querie
    "powered+by+invision+power+board" keyword

Profile links are links built on forums (vbulletin, etc.) or community platforms (telligent, etc.).

    Blogs are blogs.

They are two completely different animals.

Blogs are not profile sites are they!

blog posting is a different way of getting links. And you will never get authorised on top blogs, you need to sniff deeper using footprint searches etc.

Yes as mentioned - you're looking at the wrong sort of sites. But you can get some great links from blogs to either in your signature or in the posts.

Search for footprints like these "This site uses KeywordLuv" in Google and you'll get some nice place to get links if you leave relevant and decent replies.

Definitely get a monthly backlink subscription for a couple of months until you learn what you're doing and are comfortable finding your own.

Angela and Paul have services, Terry Kyle on this forum has an outstanding service.

It's a learning process, like I tell my business partner, the first time you tried to ride a bike it didn't work out immediately and you had someone there helping to teach you.
