Can someone please help me understand blog comment spam?

I I have a blog and in the past few days have been getting all these weird comments that are all just a bunch of letters in random order with urls that don't even take you to a valid webpage. I could understand if someone was trying to make a valid comment to gain a backlink but these comments are all just jibberish? Why even bother doing something like that?
