    Yes they do. I also suggest diversifying through links on relevant blogs, social bookmarking, profile links, etc...

    I have also noticed a positive difference by pinging the backlinks.

      Um, yeah. All linkbuilding works to some extent - even PR0 links,
      if you build enough of them and Daisy-Chain them together, will
      push your site pretty high in organic rankings.

      I know because I've done it.

      The secret, imo, is to use not just one approach and not always
      backlink to the site or page you want to optimize.

      Here's one formula:

      Write an article or release and submit it to a directory that's likely
      to rank well for your keyphase. Make sure you have a live link
      to the target website you want traffic and ranking for.

      Then you backlink to the press release/article, not always to
      the target site.

      The more sprawled-out and diverse your backlinking the less vulnerable
      you'll be to losing ranking because of algo changes.

      I've stopped using them as I found they attract spammers and don't make as much difference as articles and press releases which are much easier to do more of.

    They are no doubt high on Google's hit list of things to stop counting as are any self publicity methods. I'd spend your time on things that will stand the test of time.

      99% of all link building done by IMers would count as self publicity. Submitting an article to EZA pointing back to my site is self publicity and is not "natural." Neither is submitting a site on your wrinkle cream to Digg.

      No one knows what links will stand the test of time. Who knows, maybe in 3 years backlinks wont' even count backlinks in its ranking Algo. I don't think that's going to happen. All you can do is what works and evolve with the times.

      As for the OP, yes, they definitely work.

    Definitely! I have a site that is highly competitive that I am currently profile backlinking that has moved from nowhere to page 3. I am still backlinking and the site should reach page 1 in a month or two.

    If you want to talk PR, I have a few micro niche sites that have only used profile links and with the new update they are PR 3. Great added bonus!

    EDIT:
    If you are link building via profile links, YOU MUST ATTEMPT TO INDEX YOUR PROFILE LINKS!!!!!! If not, you will not get much credit for your links. This is the key!
