Just some food for thought for anybody getting started with SEO and Backlinking in general.

I've been very entertained by some extremely dogmatic attitudes that are prevalent here and on other forums in regard to what does and does not work/matter in regards to building backlinks.

Does the PR of the domain pass on to interior pages?

Does it matter if the url where your backlink is posted is indexed or not?

Can you have too many backlinks with a single keyword?

You know the kind of thing I'm talking about...

There are tons of questions like this that get debated day in and day out. Just don't let your fears of doing it wrong get in the way of getting in there and doing something!

Your chances of doing something that will get your site banned by Google are really pretty small. And frankly pretty much everybody that I've spoken to that has gotten a site banned, knew that what they were doing was at least Grey Hat if not a deep dark shade of Black!

As to the answers to the questions that get thrown around here, I say go and find out for yourself. Very seldom will two situations be exactly the same so in the end, what works for you is all that matters.

Go forth and Backlink...

  • I totally agree. So much of the same 'simple' questions are rehashed every day on forums like these... It wouldn't be so bad if people who know what they were talking about answered the question and went on... but then the SEO wannabees who think knowing a few buzz words qualifies them as experts begin spouting off their misinformation... and then those that know what they talk about have to explain in detail "why" the wannabees are wrong. This can really be frustrating for those that are actually trying to help others... and terrible for those who might not know better and take the bad advice.

If all forums were more like the highly moderated webmasterworld forums, life would be much better. There, people who post replies as if they are fact when they are flat out wrong end up having their post deleted and often get warned by moderators behind the scenes via PMs to basically avoid answering questions until such time that they actually know what they are talking about.

Here are some of my random thoughts on this. These are only my OPINIONS

Does the PR of the domain pass on to interior pages?
I don't care about PR, pr changes and a page without PR today might have PR tomorrow, so many people waste time on seeking PR when they could be getting some decent links in a higher volume.

Does it matter if the url where your backlink is posted is indexed or not?
It doesn't really matter in my opinion unless the site is banned by Google or the webmaster is using noindex or whatever else. New sites and newer pages should be indexed over time. If in doubt, build some links and come back later to see if they are indexed.

Can you have too many backlinks with a single keyword?
I think folks are a bit over paranoid with this one, but you might as well change it up just in case I think that you would almost need to be doing something extreme to throw any flags with this.
