LSI - how much does it matter?

We all know the importance of having the keyword you're targeting mentioned several times throughout a page if you're trying to rank for it.

How much, in your opinion, does having LSI (related keywords and phrases) matter when it comes to attracting traffic to your page?

I haven't been able to do enough A/B testing to come up with a definitive opinion about this, so I'd be curious to know if anyone has.

I guess the questions are...how does adding LSI keywords and phrases and sprinkling them through the article...

1) impact your ability to rank for the main keyword phrase you're targeting

2) effect the amount of long-tail search traffic these pages get

Any insight (especially that which is based on experience) is appreciated.

Yes, it matters but the thing is, a well researched topic will naturally include LSI keywords by default and because they naturally go together in normal conversation.

Also you can try reverse engineering the top 10 on Google for virtually any keyword and then analyse each of the pages in turn and you will see the same related keywords appearing time and again. Try it yourself and you will see.

Whether this means Google are looking for those related keywords to rank a webpage higher is open to debate. However, it is true to say that those related keywords do appear in many of the top 10 webpages on Google when checking keywords.

Like Steve Crooks said, a naturally researched topic will include a variety of related keywords. So pretty much just write "normal" and toss in a few of your keywords.

Just make sure you still insert the exact keyword you're trying to target within the title tag. Save the LSI for the main content and descriptions.
