Just wondering if its worth targetting 3 worded key phrases that have 100,000-500,000 results in quotes?

Keep in mind the 1st page is full of crappy shopping results like amazon, squiddo, shopping.com and many unknown webpages that dont specifically target the keyphrase and dont have it in their domain name?

Is it likely Ill get on the 1st page in this scenario?

I have to ask because I plan on setting up lots of new sites in the same scenario and dont want to waste my time

    Hi Ernie,

The estimated number of pages in results is not a reliable indicator of competition. It only indicates the general size of competition, not the strength of competition. You could have a relatively small number of pages, yet have a couple dozen really strong competitors that will make it very difficult to reach the first page of results. Alternatively, you could have a large number of estimated pages, yet have few strong competitors and rank well quite easily.

To determine how hard, or easy, it will be to rank on the 1st page of SERP, take a good look at the web page listed in position #10. That's the only web page you must beat to reach the first page of SERPs.

Dburk thanks so much! You really are a smart guy and I'm so happy now!

So as I said sites like Amazon and other shopping sites would be easy to rank over?

Generally they're not too difficult to out rank, however, they are all separate pages and should be treated as such.

Do some research and analyse the pages currently ranking 1-10 and see how well optimised they are. If you think you can comfortably optimise your page better then go for it.

I agree with Don. Top 10 analysis is much accurate.

However, don't ignore the sites' competition number, that give you indication of how much sites is targeting the keyword.

You also need to reference allintitle to have a feel of direct competition.
