What am I doing wrong - not getting enough traffic

Started this health and fitness blog over 9 months ago and only have a page rank of 1.

Working hard on getting back-links but they don't seem to show up.

I think I'm doing all the right things but still getting very little traffic.

Any Ideas?

if you're having problems getting your backlinks indexed then look into backlink boosting - there are free and paid options available.

From a quick glance at your site...

The site looks top-notch, very pro - I like

Your title tag is way way too long... narrow that down to a few important keywords, the rest of that information should be in your meta description.

Try - Fitness | Health Advice | Weight Loss | Nutrition - or something like that. Focus in on the keywords you want to rank for. BTW... those aren't easy keywords to rank for.

Taking a gander at your 634 backlinks according to backlinkwatch, your anchor texts aren't doing you any good when it comes to ranking. "Fitness Contrarian", "Mike" and "http://www.fitnesscontrarian.com" are pretty useless since nobody is searching for those terms. You want "Health Advice" or "Optimal Nutrition" or whatever keywords you are targeting to get search engine traffic from. Also, most of those 634 backlinks are all from the same site.

Those are some of my initial impressions... onsite SEO is weak and you need to get more backlinks indexed with appropriate anchor text.

I would say you're missing Keyword Research ?
+ post comments on other blogs + more social bookmarking + more feed/rss/directory submissions + press releases ? etc..

Picking the right keywords + proper backlinking strategy = massive traffic.

If you pick the wrong keyword, no matter how many backlinks you throw in, your traffic would be limited...

The health niche is a tough one especially when you're going after general health topics. The competition is dug in deep and hard to beat.

You're best bet, like webtix and kkchoon suggested is do some keyword research first.

After you find a couple of reasonable keywords, write an article for each keyword and backlink those article pages directly.

Don't worry, boosting articles individually will help your entire site grow.

Leave the big juicy high traffic keywords to the big dogs for now unless you think you can outrank webmd.

Nice site and kudos to your for sticking with it!

There's great advice above. Like jasonmorgan said, it seems like you need a more diverse backlinking strategy.

    Get links from different sites.

Write some articles using keyword research as advised above.

Once you have them on your site, submit to a bunch of article directories linking back to the appropriate page with the appropriate anchor text.

The backlinks you get to those inner pages will help strengthen your whole site and homepage.

Then get backlinks to the articles you submitted.

Compile your articles into a report and submit to places like scribed.

Create hubpages, squidoo lenses, zimbio sites to get even more exposure.

See if you can do some guest blogging or submit articles to high profile sites in your niche. There are probably a ton of them that would love you to write them a unique article that you can put your resource box on!

On-site Optimization is very important. As ppl have said before, focus on your keywords. If someone was to trying to find a site like yours - what would they type in? When you answer that question - then you can start making a KW list and start plugging them into your site.

Keyword research is the key here.

Take a look at your Alexa Stats.
Looks like your traffic is going the wrong way.

Now take a look at your Search Analytics.
About 85% of your search traffic is coming from
The term Fitness Contrarian. And the Google Keyword
tool doesn't even have enough data to give monthly
    searches for that term.

Take a look at a competitors site that is ranking in the
top 300,000 or better on Alexa and look at their Search
Analytics to find what keywords they are getting their
traffic from. This is some very basic keyword research
that can at least get you pointed in the right direction.

That is a pretty competitive niche, its going to take a really long time to rank well and persistence. Your best bet is to target long tail search phrases.

Hey Fitness Contrarian, I liked your site - a couple of the old Arnie photos made me think of some ancient ads I used to see in the backs of mags.

You seem to have a ton of links, but they are nearly all sitewide from a couple of places. I think you need to diversify on your backlinks. All good advice above, find longtail keywords to rank inner pages for. But I'd also hit your main domain with anchor texted backlinks from diverse sources.

    Good Luck!

Jason was right you can find some backlinks booster in the net. Have tried doing social networking like twitter and facebook? They are effective too in driving traffic for your site.

      Leverage the power of YouTube.

I see that you already have at least 1 self-produced YouTube video linked to an article on your blog.

You can get an AMAZING amount of targeted traffic if you can get some subscribers on YouTube. It's a lot easier to build your YouTube channel up than it is to use SEO to build your blog. Once you get your YouTube channel going strong, it will really boost your blog up, especially if you can generate a sense of community around the blog (using a forum or something similar).

By the way, I tried to leave a comment on your blog the other night, and it didn't work: it redirected me to a blank page.

I had a look at your backlinks in site explorer.

It appears that you have backlinks pointing to 2 different domains...in other words, to the www site and to the non www site.

Make you point your backlinks to only one domain. Need to understand that search engines have indexed both domains, which is working against you.

To rectify this problem you need to do a redirect...and when creating backlinks in the future make sure you point all your links to only one domain.

          How do you redirect?

Go into Google webmaster and Yahoo site explorer and pick www site not both.

JaySchmidt is right. Your Video page goes nowhere. If you can put some good videos on Youtube (be yourself on cam - or just make presentation style videos in Windows Movie Maker) and link back to your blog from the info box on Youtube.

Put a tune on there (if you know someone who can give a free tune then that's all good)

Make sure you paste keywords into the info box, too. Some people have said unlimited but that's got to be spammy. 5 - 10 is good.

    Backlink the Youtube URL

Don't be spammy!..... grow this vid over a few months. It'll get pagerank within a couple of months

Please take that advice and don't make ANOTHER move until you get that process established. In the mean time, you are most likely going to receive a steady stream of suggestions to do this and to do that. REJECT those notions and LEARN how to perform PROPER Keyword Research before proceeding forward!

You do have a great looking site! it's crisp, clean, uncluttered and easy yo navigate. My questions are:

What is the objective of the site?
To obtain clients in your area?
      Are you marketing any products?
Is it monetized and I just missed it?

I have another site to obtain local clients. The goal of this site is to build traffic and get email subscribers and eventually monetize with health and fitness info products that I produce.

What you can do is buy targeted traffic, instead of investing a lot of time and energy into keyword research and using various tools, etc. You literally spend about 2 mins invested and just watch your conversions add up. It changed my life so much I bought my own traffic site and selling it cheap compared to the top dog traffic selling sites. My customers average conversion rates are pretty decent and virtually everyone profits off the high quality targeted traffic.

    Hi,

I just joined to finally make a first post. Lurked this forum for six months. Learnt most of my backlink knowledge from here. I would definitely start keyword researching. It has been said but its probably the biggest concern for traffic for you.

My weakness is on-site seo, I don't know a whole lot about that.
