Ranking For A Single Keyword Using An Exact Keyword Domain

I'm going to be paying a ton of money to buy a one word domain. (an exact match keyword for the word I'm planning to rank for)

In my experience in all of these years I have always ranked for two and three word keywords. I have never had the fortune to rank for a single word keyword.

I'd like to know how important a factor domain age will be. I'm getting a domain that has been parked for a lot of years and has no backlinks.

The top ranked websites have backlinks ranging from 1k to 20k.

I know that you can't really tell without looking at the niche or the competition.. but I'm sure someone with experience can know roughly how hard it is.

Since it was parked for a lot of years, don't you think someone had the same idea before ?

Here's a suggestion; find out how long it needs for people to rank #X or page 1 for niche long tail keywords, with X results, X results in quotes, X allintitle/allinanchor etc and compare that with your results, and see where that gets you..

putting the exact keyword in the domain can really help a lot but still there are other factors that can affect in your rankings. Let me share you my experience on this issue. I have work for a client and it have a website that the keyword was exactly on the domain, without doing anything it ranked first in that specific keyword but the competition was just low. I think the result will differ if the competition was high.

One word keyword searches are just not done in the real world.
Domain name or not. It takes a whole lot more than that to
get real people doing real searches.

domain(website) age in that regard would be zero. Google indexes and counts
      websites, not parked domains.

You paid a ton of money for something. Domain brokers get rich on myths

I haven't bought the domain yet. I checked out the word in Google keyword tool and it shows 165,000 searches a month on exact mode. The word(which I obviously can't reveal) is a tourist destination.. not really a country .. but more of a destination)
Do you think Google might be counting long tails with the word and reporting the same stats for the single word?

It is quiet difficult to find the same one keyword which you can rank to get get maximum traffic to earn a lot through adsense.
And it would be quiet difficult to compete for SEO for such keywords.

You really need to do a lot of solid research IMO but, good luck.

When buying an expired domain or other, it's good to check how many pages are indexed and, if you can recover those goog indexed pages cached or with way back machine..

I just started using a wp plugin see my sig which builds back links by giving site owners a free gift..I got one blog on the first page of google in under a week..and one on at nr 11 of 2.8 miilion results this one has 6600 monthly searches so, 165,000 is big..

There comes to a point where the exact domain doesn't matter anymore. If it's silly mini niche product marketing then exact domain is a MUST because they work well and fast.
But from the sounds of what you're saying the backlinks are the most important here and NOT the domain.

Thank you for your comments. I am having second thoughts.

The domain is a keyword for a tourist destination. Something like "niagara" (niagara falls)but in a different country and city alltogether.

The way Paulpg mentioned above.. it does seem plausible that people would be inclined to search for long tails rather than the keyword... BUT google keyword tool shows 162k exact searches for the word.

You're bettre off getting an alternative domain with that keyword in it and and using that dough to outsource the backlinking.
