Whenever I post links in twitter, I spell them out by hand ad do not use the URL shorteners. Interestingly, when I Google my website name, these links are showing up in the results. So, apparently they are getting indexed. Not sure if they are worth anything. Comments?

Of course it's +1 backlink but it's not getting ranked that high because twitter is a very general website so it's not related to your website's subject. Unless maybe you post several tweets containing keywords related to your niche..

This topic brings up a question for me: When Google indexes Twitter, does it follow shortened links? If so, does it count as a backlink to the site to which it is followed?

Don't confuse tweets with backlinks. They are not.

The url shortening is a moot point, although I have heard
that google does not like tinyurl too much.

Don't think you are tweeting yourself to backlink heaven.

The value of twitter comes from followers and the PR of your
twitter account. The higher quality you are and they are, the
      better.

Don't confuse google's showing of tweets with anything more
      than just that.

Use the # hash marks to your advantage.

If you search for ste:twitter.com in google you will see that twitter has 95,800,000 pages indexed.

by the nature of how twitter works, every tweet becomes its one page and can be referenced directly like Twitter / aroshta azka: How to Add Google Analytic ...

Google bots are happily following links and indexing these pages.

I don't think you will see any real SEO benefit from it.

With twitter, the words you choose are more important. Tweet about popular topics and you will get more traffic then a plain google listing anyway.

Maybe you are using a different definition of what a backlink
is. A backlink is counted towards your PR. Links such as
the ones you described are not backlinks. Twitter is one
big nofollow. Don't mistake tweets or twitter pages being indexed
as backlinks being counted. They are not the same.

    Well said Paul.

Unfortunately Status.net servers are going nofollow too. These servers use to be easy to get a high PR profile page to send your links from. People couldn't control themselvers though, so the servers are pretty much useless for decent backlinks now.

I recently joined this forum, besides the awesome factor, to ask a very similar question regarding url shortning backlinks from article directory resource boxes...

I've kicked off a hefty article campaign and after checking my backlinks, I figured I'd have more indexed by now (not complaining because I know its a work in progress).

I've been using a url shortner in all my resource boxes... does that prevent the index of backlinks?

My gut (NOW) tells me I should avoid the url shortners... I'd love to hear your thoughts great forum of the wise???

      Thanks,

      Wes

        Since this has been revisited....

It seems you should indeed not use a url shortener if you can. Read on.

Doing a search for a web page of mine showed numerous tweets in
google searches. I did not search for backlinks, I never do. I search
for the site in quotes. (for me, searching for the url shows more of an overall
        presence)

Not sure what finding old tweets in google searches means. I will add
that the tweets were listed in the normal searches, not tweets.

Obviously it means the twitter account I have for that niche
has some good grace from google.

Now searching for links, the tweets do not show up.

        Anyone want to opine?

I have always been told google can read some url shorteners like bit.ly. Regardless, your tweets or links from twitter are building your twitter profile, and the website link from within Twitter will be that much more valuable to your site than that from the occasional tweeter
