Hello everyone, I'm fairly new to SEO, however my current job requires me to do a lot of backlink building, and use other SEO strategies, so I've been thinking about taking on a personal project of my own.

I was wondering how hard it would be to rank on the 1st page for a search term that has roughly 300,000 results (240,000 if you put it in "quotes").

I don't want a project that would be too hard - but I want something at least a little challenging.

Thanks.

Depends on the keyword.. There are a whole host of other factors that need to be considered.

    1. How tough are the top 10 on Google for that Keyword?
    2. How many competitors have got their on and off page SEO right?
    3. How many backlinks do your competitors get?
    4. How valuable is that keyword in commercial terms?
    5. How many advertisers are there for that keyword?
    6. How much are they spending?

These are just some of the things you need to consider.

Very good check list to do with SEO strategies, SEO is a competition with the winner who understand the rivals and the rules.

Thanks for replying to my thread.

    1. How tough are the top 10 on Google for that Keyword?
None seem to REALLY be going after it - it's pretty specific.
    2. How many competitors have got their on and off page SEO right?
I'm not too great at detecting on/off-page SEO to be honest. Lots of them are using wordpress which has decent on-site SEO built in.
    3. How many backlinks do your competitors get?
According to yahoo, most of them only have 20-30 (to the specific page, not homepage).
    4. How valuable is that keyword in commercial terms?
Rather valuable - I'll be promoting a leveling guide via clickbank with it.
    5. How many advertisers are there for that keyword?
    None - it's too specific.

You can also notice that if any web2.0 sites resulting in the first 3 pages. Anyway if you can build quality backlinks then you can easily reach the first page. Few months back i dominate very high competition of 40,000,000 results within 3 months and for that keyword advertiser also there, so you can easily dominate your keyword with good backlink building.

It's all depends on the keyword and the competitor. You have to find out how well competitor's websites are optimized, how many backlinks they have, what are the anchor text of backlinks. One small example - if I type in Google as chandan dutta, I get 260,000 result. Again if I type sole f80 treadmill review, I get only 23,00 result. But practically it will be much difficult to rank for sole f80 treadmill review than chandan dutta.
