Anyone tried this for a strategy?

We are always told either go for a competitive niche or go create lots of sites/blogs in various less competitive niches.

BUT...has anyone tried making just 1 site and targetting hundreds of key phrases that are searched only say 30-100 times?

If would be a lot easier to rank for them and if you add them all up I think it would possible be better than trying to rank for 1 semi competitive term.

What does everyone think?

    it's not a bad idea.

If I get what you are saying, creating a single blog and each post targets one very uncompetitive keyword.

You'll do some minimal backlinking to each blog post to make sure they rank #1 and over the course of time all of that work will pay off in creating a pseudo authority site dominating a lot of smaller keywords.

Throw some adsense on the puppy and sit back and watch the cash roll in

I like what you're thinking... not a bad idea.

Yeah thats exactly right. Because right now I feel like a lost puppy trying to make heaps of niche sites and trying to rank them all.

Id rather put my love into 1 site for now and build it into an authority site and targetting lots of smaller key phrases.

The bad thing is I will have to write articles on terms that may get 20 searches a month but I think in the end it will be worth it.

Seems like the longer, harder but more achievable road to go down.

I guess the key is how fast you can write and add new content and then throw a small amount of backlinks at every article you write.

The trick is backlinking every article.

I know there are sites similar to what you are suggesting that are running adsense on hundreds of pages but the big difference is I don't know of any that are backlinking and trying to rank for easy keywords with every page. I think it more of a throw as much crap out as they can and hope they get some traffic strategy.

An article a day plus 20 backlinks should add up over time and is a very manageable project.

Pick a niche that has a lot of keyword options and give it a try.

    Thanks Jason for your input.

I have 100 articles laying around doing nothing so I figure I need to us them! I have already started making the blogand have added a few articles to my blog and EZA already.

I will add a few pieces of content slowly each day and build the site up.

Then I will breakdown the 100 keywords I have already and write articles on subterms for them.

For example: (my site isnt about bags)
    Main Keyword site is: Bags

Keyphrase #1 is = Library bags
Sub keyphrase #1- Small library bags (write article)
Sub keyphrae #2 - Plastic library bags (write article)
    etc
    etc

Anyway Ill see how it goes

It is certainly a strategy for getting your foot in the door in a niche but if I were you I would ONLY use it for getting your foot in the door and gaining some exposure and small amount of authority. Once you have those pages indexed and ranking high you should set your target threshold a lot higher if you want to make some serious money.

        Good point Steve

I think with all the possible content and backlinks Id have to my site I think down the track if I decide to aim for bigger keywords, i might have a bit easer time ranking for them since my site hopefully will have a high pr and will be established.

The problem is what if something happens to your site for whatever reason like you get slapped or something along those lines. Then all of your income is dried up.

I think it's better to have multiple income sources and not be too reliant on any one site, but that's just me.

I do face the same problem as you, though. I initially made way too many sites before I had a good handle on any of them and it was hard to keep up.

One thing I have often wondered if it's actually necessary to build targeted blogs each time - although I generally do.

I have an 9 year old domain and have put pages for electrical goods, games and a lots of other niches all in sub domains including some in very competitive areas.

The individual pages all rank really well - and I get traffic from all sorts of niches. It's not high PR but is a static html site and I do pay for the Yahoo listing.

Im doing something similar in that Im building fewer sites.

Where we might differ though is I am going for the mid-way difficulty from the off.

More cometitive than a true niche site but has lots of room for targetting lesser keywords and at the same time, once Im ranking high for the mid competion and the easier terms I will then switch focus and go for the jugular and target the very high traffic keywords.

By the time this happens my sites should be gaining momemtum and trust to make the job easier (hopefully).

This way I can manage a small to meium sized portfolio.

My longterm goal is to turn my sites into trusted authority sites, Im not worried how long this takes.

I actually think that's a very good idea.

In many respects, it's simply an extension of what the whole "long tail" concept is about: that the combined volume at the far end (the 'long tail') often far exceeds the 'head'.

    Oh,

Nearly forgot, my sites names have the really big high traffic keywords in the name along with a couple other relevant search worthy keywords so expanding is no problem and all in the correct order.
