I have recently launched a new website. I just want to know how long does it take for Google to recognize backlinks to my site. I am currently generating backlinks by posting on different forums, blog commenting and directory submission. It has been a week now but still there are 0 backlinks to my site according to Google.Yahoo is relatively quicker than Google in recognizing backlinks.Does anyone have any idea how long does it take for Google to recognize backlinks to my website?

it varies greatly at the rate and frequency google crawls your site - that is how they get found. It's advisable to spread evenly the frequency at which google will find your links i.e. when you social bookmark your backlinks otherwise if you social bookmark all of them on one day etc then you may get penalised.

Low quality links can take several weeks or never. Higher quality can be indexed within 12 hours or less. Depends entirely on what kind of links.

You've got that wrong or you maybe made a mistake in typing. Its not the frequency that Google crawls your site. Its the frequency that Google crawls the site where you link back to your site.

I really would waste to much time worrying about the links that google shows or indexes as they never show that many.

I YSE is showing them fairly quick then you are on the right track...

Google doesn't show all backlinks using as - Linkomain.com . Yahoo Explorer is is better. In Google Webmaster you can see the actual number of backlinks but it is slow. Wherever you build links, check that page in Google whether that is indexed or not. For example - you created a links in forum profile. Now check whether that profile page is indexed or not. If it is indexed then your link will be counted. Similarly if you submit articles, see whether they are indexed or not.

To get actual value of baclinks, the page should be indexed where you place your link.

Just because Google doesn't show you that they see the backlinks doesn't mean that they don't. They are slow and sometimes will never show every backlink. Even if they aren't showing, you can bet that most of them are being calculated... if the links are on pages that are indexed and being cached frequently. Don't rely on what Google tells you. Try Yahoo Site Explorer for checking backlinks or sites like: Backlink Finder - SEO Tool (Find Backlinks)
    Analyze Backlinks
Backlinks Checker Tool - Backlink Watch

This tool is also really good, even the free version - SEO SpyGlass Software - Instantly Find Out How Your Competitors Got To 'Top Ten' In Google, Yahoo! and Bing Search Engines
