Does Google JACK With Market Samurai results?

Hi,

So I was mucking around with market samurai and microniche finder for a few hours. Not sure how long.

I started getting results for seoc that didn't match AT ALL the results I got when I manually searched on my laptop using a different internet connection and IP address.

So I took my laptop down to to Starbucks and ran the same exact keywords through market samurai. Now my pc at home IS a pc. My laptop is a Mac. That is a possible source of variation.

Result: A MASSIVE difference in SEOC results. I'm wondering if Google didn't muck with my Market Samurai results after X amount of time since I did NOT use proxies.

Example: korean dating
desktop seoc: 585,000
laptop: 91,000

You *could* say maybe 1 ip is going to 1 data center and the other to another. But that's a HUGE difference in search results.

Example: Korean Marriage
BOTH show 398 broad math searches. BUT the laptop shows 4610 on SEOC. The desktop shows 20,800.

meeting girlfriend
Both show 118 broad searches. But the laptop shows 746 seoc The desktop 5400.

On my desktop if I type "meeting girlfriend" into google in quotation marks, I get back 5440 results. On my laptop on an ip address known to google I got the same.

THEN I ran Market Samurai from home on a different ip and only MINUTES LATER the same "meeting girlfriend" that showed 5440 on my laptop in a quoted search NOW SHOWS 745.

It's as though when I USED Market Samurai Google switched the results on me.

Anyone else see or experience this? Or even know what I"m referring to?

    That's a scary thought. I would be very interested to see this tested further.

    Same with me, sometimes the rankings are off by 5 or less. But I found that when you're in a position for a long time it get it correct. It probably has something to do with google's data centers or the market samurai proxy that it uses for rank tracker.

      Hi,

      Well, I think in anchor links would be a more accurate reading IF google doesn't muck with those also. But I'm starting to think they probably do that.

      I'm sure the official answer is that it's a different data center. BUT I had the numbers checked by someone in the Philippines AND someone im Canada.
      They got the SAME results MNF shows me.

      And they draw from different data centers.

      I think maybe Google has ONE data center for automated inquiries to JACK with them.

      To be FAIR to Market Samurai, this ONLY applies to seoc as far as I know. AND their results are the same as Wordtracker from what I see. So it's NOT just them.

      Also, Market Samurai has MANY other features other than seoc so I don't want to sound like I'm criticizing the tool. I'm just trying to UNDERSTAND the variations in results which are very large and could really have an impact on marketing choices.

        Yeah, this will not affect if I use MS or not, just maybe I will look at one or two other tools to kind of find an average instead of relying on the word of only one source.

          No, Google isn't jacking with Market Samurai results. (I'd be humbled if they saw us as that much of a threat that they'd target us by changing their algorithms like that!!)

          If you're comparing a search for your keyword "in quotes like this" to the SEOC figure that Market Samurai retrieves (i.e. make sure you're comparing apples with apples!), and you're getting different results - the reason is Google's data centers are in different states of update.

          Google has THOUSANDS of servers spread over several data centers.

          There's no way to keep all of them all updated with 100% identical information - the information on Google is constantly being reindexed and updated.

          This means sometimes you get different SEOC figures.

          Usually the results are very similar (out by a few percent here and there).

          A small percentage of keywords will be out by an order of magnitude (i.e. you'll see 100,000 when the figure is actually 1,000,000.)

          So why do you only notice it inside Market Samurai?

          Well, most people ignore the the SEOC figures when they search.

          And when they DO look at the number of results Google returns, they rarely (if ever) check the figure against two or more data centers.

          It's only because Market Samurai has made the data so easily available that people are even noticing this phenomena at Google.

          So what do you do?

          Still use Market Samurai's SEOC figures. They're just as good as the figures you get when you're searching by yourself.

          But before you finally decide on a keyword, take a few seconds to do some due diligence.

          Click on the SEOC result inside Market Samurai, and Market Samurai will open up a browser window and do the identical search from your IP address.

          This will *generally* send the query to a different data center (I say generally, because with 1,000's of data centers the law of averages says that chances are you'll connect to a different one than the one Market Samurai hit!)

          If the figure is the same or close, then take it as a confirmation of SEOC.

          If the figure is out by an order of magnitude, take it as a warning... The higher figure OR the lower figure could be wrong. (Sadly, there's no way to confirm which one is more accurate. You might just need to come back to the keyword in a week or so to see what the SEOC figure has "settled down" to be.)

            Just to repeat something...

            Make sure you're comparing apples with apples.

            I don't know how MNF is gathering their version of SEOC - but if they're doing broad match searches (i.e. searching for dog training) and Market Samurai is doing phrase match searches (i.e. searching for "dog training") then this will also cause the results to be different.

    Read what Brent says.

    Google is not ONE centralized system, but hundreds/thousands of servers spread over 50-60 ? (currently) data centers. All the data is constantly updated, one data server might yield other numbers than another data server because its data is older and so forth.
