If you focus on a main competitive keyword, will then rank for long tail terms?

I was thinking, if I focus on one main, highly competitive keyword, will I end up ranking for long tail keywords automatically?

Example, say the keyword with most searches and highest competition is this:

get rid of annoying girlfriend

If I build lots of backlinks for that keyword alone, will I then rank good for these keywords automatically:

get rid of annoying girlfriend fast
how to get rid of annoying girlfriend
how to get rid of annoying girlfriend fast

...and so on, and so on.

Know what I mean? If I focus on one "core" keyword, can I achieve a bunch of good rankings for various long-tail keywords?

I cant answer your question because this is exactly what I am testing right now.

I have however had hits using more or less the criteria you mentioned here with a 2 week old site and only 2 posts indexed.

The searche queries were very similar but not exact to my keywords.

On further investigation I found these searches were on page 1 google for my site.

Its an experiment Im doing involving domain name and post titles.

Sounds cool, if you find anything out (and don't mind sharing) please post here again about this!
