I want to revisit something that I brought up once: getting rid of monetizations in order to boost page ranking. Example: I got rid of all adsense ads on my site and got an immediate 20% boost in the first two weeks. But then it tapered off and I have seen no change.

Now I am wondering if I remove affiliate advertising, Amazon in my case, if that could likely get me a boost in page ranking?

I have heard contradictory things on this and would like to get some additional input before I go ripping my Amazon ads out of twenty different pages.

Any comments/experiences would be much appreciated.

Also, if you feel that affiliate advertising hurts page ranking, is it only for the larger affiliates such as Amazon, CJ, etc.?

It is dangerous to attribute an increase to dropping your ads. No one outside of Google knows the entire algorithm so even though you may have got a jump right after you dropped the ads, it does not mean that is why you got the increase. The other thing is the algorithm changes over time so what worked then might not work now. Over the years I have tried dropping ads, running a few ads and running a lot of ads and the only thing I have found is it just isn't worth it not to have the ads unless I am using the site 100% for authority and link juice to other sites.

Yes, thx for the warning. I was actually going to put into my post the fact that I recognized that pulling the ads may have had nothing to do with the 20% boost. My hunch is that it is one of 50 factors that Google uses and that's why I got a small but noticeable boost.

If I'm right, then that ties in with what you are saying, because it's probably better to have the adsense revenue for such a relatively small boost. However, I have left them off of my site, because my site looks so much cleaner and less "hypey" without them. I make more off significantly more off ebook sales, so I think it's important to look authoritative, etc.

However, I wanted to ask specifically about affiliate advertising because there was a person or two that absolutely insisted it made a huge difference. And, interestingly enough, my affiliate links are quite subtle: I don't use pics for example and I only use one link in about 20 pages generally.

Anyway, any advice, experiences about thiis would be much appreciated.

The whole point of doing internet marketing is to make money by selling a product, or advertising someones product. So unless you are just doing it for fun, then dropping the ads defeats the purpose.

Lots of sites appear on the first page of the search results for just about any key word and have ads on their site. So I wouldn't put anything into your move in the results of your ranking to removing your ads. Just get more back links and put your ads back. IMHO

Well, you could be right, but I feel that the less sales hypey my site looks, the more ebooks I sell. I have seen that in several different ways. For example, I recently added an Amazon carousel with relevant products. I think the carousel looks cool and I placed it in a fairly subtle location on the side (of all pages).

But my ebook sales went to nearly zero after that. In my case, I emphasize science and so I think that anything that looks like I'm just out to sell stuff and not an expert damages my sales. I have to admit that I have not proven that, but I've seen good evidence several times with situations like the above...
