Competitive in a larger market than regular niche..

I have read all sorts of ideas on how to be succesful in a niche, but my question is what if you're someone like me who loves Texas Hold'em. That's a much larger market than what is normally described as a niche.

So how do you get anywhere near a good spot on search engines in such a competitive market? Is there more to it than regular niche marketing? Do you need massive amounts of back links? I understand it will be more work but I also imagine when it works it will be more rewarding as well.

Any tips?

Well you'll have your work cut out for you if you go for the main Texas Hold'em keywords. What most people will tell you is to go for the long tail keywords. They'll have a lot less searches but it shouldn't be as competitive as the main ones.

Long tail meaning what? Could you give an example of a long tail keyword?

If you put up good content on your website with good keyword density,
and work on those backlinks, in time... you'll get there.

Long tail keywords are 3, 4, 5 or longer keyword strings. For example

      Texas Hold'em Starting Hand Strategy
Texas Hold'em Starting Hand Strategy Chart
How to Find the Best Texas Hold'em Sites

These will be less competitive than the main keyword of Texas Hold'em
