Competitive niche, site no.2 has only 2 back links?

Looking at a pretty large & competitive niche, the top ranking site has 8k back links, all the other sites across the first few pages also have back links in the thousands yet at slot number two is a pretty poor, three page site with little content and a whopping two back links!

Is this some random exception to the rule as i cant see anything that would make it rank so high. It has only recently appeared so it may not stay for long but saying that it has always been ranked in the first, say 5-10 pages.

    What is the niche, what is the site, what were you using to check backlinks?

    It's not some black hat secret spooky magic or anything. block yahoo bots, 301 redirects etc... backlinks can be hidden.

      The site is carcleaningtips.co.uk ranking for the search term car cleaning, i was using yahoo site explorer & back link watch, the WHOIS says he's not trading so doesn't give an address & i get the impression the site owner is not an internet marketer...

    i get the impression the site owner is not an internet marketer...
    It's most definitely an Internet Marketer. It's just not your typical adsense warrior forum Internet Marketer. It's part of a larger marketing scheme for your-carhire.com

      Ah right, I wondered why there was no adsense or anything, I was looking at it being ranked for "car cleaning" not "car cleaning tips".

      So to answer my original query are the back links simply hidden then?

        A few probably but more than likely the site above it isn't even anchor text optimized for that keyword. Pages get ranked all the time for low competion key phrases that are not aiming to be.

    Logged into the UK site (but you may use another data center on your side) and it doesn't rank on the first page for "car cleaning" but number two for "car cleaning tips".

    And "car cleaning tips" is not a competitive keyword at all.
    Which is irrelevant since the site doesn't exist to sell anything. It's a booster site that exists only as a backlink for another site. I don't think whoever owns that site cares if it ranks for anything at all.
