Significance of Domain Age?

I am using market samurai while doing the thirtydaychallenge.com, and am trying to learn more about SEO.

One thing I notice in one of the analysis tools is it will bring up Domain Age (expressed in years) as a potential factor that makes life more difficult to compete. Sometimes the addresses associated with the Domain Age have a low PR.

I'm just trying to work how much this really plays into the whole mix of things?

I think it will be less than what we expect.

    It's insignificant. Worry about content.

Bellthorpe, as a beginner I'm trying to learn about all of this. I am not saying you are wrong. But would it be possible for you to go into a little bit more detail?

Not sure how I can go into more detail. It's quite straightforward.

Google itself says that content is the biggest factor in SEO. You are reading Google webmaster blogs, aren't you?

There's a myriad of factors that come into page ranking, most of them small, and ever-changing. If you try to chase them all the time, you will be wasting time that could/should be sent improving the content on your site to make it interesting to visitors and thus linkable.

As bellthrope says its insignificant, although im sure there will be lots of people saying how important it is and contradict me lol.

Its a FACTOR in search engine ranking, how big no one will ever really know, I personally wouldnt worry about it, after all if it was all about domain age, then you could just go out and buy a second hand domain thats really old and rank well on google couldnt you? but no one does that as its no that big an issue.

Also if u own a domain thats not that old what can u do about it ? not much lol !

Hey, domain age is really important factor, because people from google said it several times. Besides older the domain the more authority it has and the more authority it has the higher the page rank will be.

So it must be true I guess then:rolleyes:

Not necessarily. IMHO, domain age usually does not give authority in itself. Often times older domains have more (and better) backlinks. But, it is the backlinks that give the domain the authority, and note the domain age. Thus, sometimes domain age and authority are correlated, but I wouldn't say it was a causal relationship.

In my experience it is important to have an old domain, but also very important to register your domain for many years (this is easy). Although I do not believe into the "sandbox" concept.

    This is my experience:

I have started up WooRank.com a Website Analysis tool on January 15th 2010. The domain was registered since Octobre 2009, so it was a very young domain.

I made the registration for 10 years. After 3 month of operations (by early April 2010), google gave us a PR4 (from 0 few days before) and Google sends already sends some traffic to our website, although most of our visitors are "direct visits" still.

I have to say that we have been highly backlinked (more than 1200 time on Delicious, and many other bloggers among them TechCrunch.com and other popular blogs).

So I am not sure about the positive impact of an old domain, but I am sure that you can have great results with "young" domain is you work on your SEO !

Age of Domain Name is a good factor for Search engine ranks!

  • There are many other factors that are used while search engines rank a website. The domain age is certainly important but they are not the only factor. G now knows about domain trading so they do keep some more facts with giving domain age as important factor.

In my experience, domain age usually is not an important factor. Sometimes domain age is correlated with things like # and quality of backlinks and PR, but those are really independent things.

That being said, in a few of my niches there are a few sites at the top of the rankings will not budge no matter what and based off of a full analysis of everything that is publicly available, it seems that there is no other explanation than that they are getting a boost because their sites are significantly older (with content) than the competing sites (the new kids on the block).

    Hey

Domain age can give you a significant boost in ad position and a big boost over your competitors. If you have the chance to get an older (preferably already indexed site) domain, go for it.

Any questions just let me know
