Google changing the KW game?

I had my site in #2 position for my KW phrase for over a month now and all of a sudden it dropped to page 3. And I see that another site (7 pages, with 1 link from a PR5 site) made it to the 1st page....

And other sites on the 1st page also are very different from what they were for the past month or so, since I've been watching it carefully.

I have a few more links than 1 or 2..., a lot more pages plus edu and gov links. And that site doesn't even have the KW Phrase on its home page, but it does have it in the domain name (so do I).

Is something weird happening to how Google reads KW? I know they've changed their KW tool.

BTW, my site is back on page 1 (position 9), but that other tiny site is still on page 1 as well (with 1 link!!!).

I was checking backlinks with SEO Elite. Maybe it doesn't show all the links?

Any ideas?

It doesn't show all the links but you also need to realise that links aren't all created equal. A single PR5 link represents a lot of link juice and is enough to rank for a lot of terms. It'll certainly out do a *lot* of PR0 links, which just represent a link juice from a single page.

Of course, I have links from high ranking pages, too, several of ezine articles (PR6), etc.

Did you check your webmaster account for the indexed pages? Did some get deindexed? I know my number goes up and down all the time...

perhaps this is just the google dance, how old is the site??? just keep on building links etc.

Did you make any changes to your pages / site at all lately?

I've had the site for 3 years and yes, I am changing it all the time (adding content, improving things, etc), but I cannot link the drop in ranking to anything specific, except maybe one thing - I included a word in my top nav which then gets picked up on every page of my site. When I checked my webmaster tools, I saw that that word was the most prominent on my site... That's not what I wanted! It diluted the KW content of my site. So I removed the word, but the site came back to the 1st page today while webmaster tools are still showing that old word there, so I'm not sure it did anything.

I just don't get how a small site with 1 link can get to page 1. There must be something they are doing that's not showing in my SEO competitive analysis tools.

Do you have as much content on the page? Whats the word count on the pages? Content seems to move my pages up.

You can check my blog for a solution exactly to this issue, on how to get your page back up....(check my signature)

But also it can be the google dance, so just do as I say in my post, add content (youtube videos help tremendously), add links from authority sites on your niche. By authority sites I mean sites that google thinks are authority, in other words, try getting links from the sites ranked in the first page of google for the Kw you are targetting.
Your site will be back soon

My page that was in #2 had definitely more content than the one that's on page 1 now. That's why the whole thing was so baffling. I like to study my competitors to see what I can do better, but in this case I just don't know what to think.

It's almost impossible to predict and expect certain things when it comes to google. I have also noticed some different things about my sites. They never seem to stop dancing. What I have noticed was when I start adding new contents and start guest writing with my links, I see my sites going up in rankings. May be you should try to do that. Even doing some Yahoo answer, blog comments etc... seem to help the site move up again. Good luck!

Ahh, the Google dance, It happenned to me a couple of weeks ago. I had a site at number five on page 1 of google and then all of a sudden ended up on page 7. Then about a week later it was on page 1 again at position 9 and gradually worked its way to postion 5 again. Google is definately doing something at the moment because the same site has briefly been in position 2 on two seperate occassions but then goes back to five. The bottom line here is that Google will alway tinker with things but seeing whats been going on recently I do thinkthere is a change in their algorithm!!

Try mixing your link strategy, use blog comments or blog posts, don't solely rely on one type of links!
