Internal links Vs External links

Right, simple question which no-one will have the answer to, however indications will be great.

What value does an internal link have compared to an external link? Obviously we all know some sites like Amazon and Nextag and Wikipedia all link internally quite heavily and seem to rank well, however obviously it isnt just their internal links that make them rank but their domain authority and PR and sheer quantity of links.

Although internal links seem to be valued in Google, I have beat quite a few big brands to some phrases (the big brands were optimising for the term with title tags and descriptions etc) with better and more external links. The recent example I can give, is my site outranking a big brand name even though that page had 30k links (29k internal and 1k external) I ended up with around 1.5k external links all of which were quality compared to the other brand.

I also assume there must be some kind of devaluing factor for a certain number of internal links.... Like how sitewide links have been devalued, surely internal links dont carry as much weight as an external... As otherwise we could all buy relatively high PR domains and then just create tons of pages, have a great internal linking structure and rank for any term we want.... For example, lets say just for comparitive purposes (this means no idiots on this thread saying no link is equal, which is true, but we are not debating that point) an external link has a value of 1.00, and an internal link has the value of say 0.50, however if you have say over 100 internal links, the value of the links over 100 is 0.40 and so on and so on... Until say over 10k internal links, the internal links only have a factor of say 0.05 each....

Anyone with any experience/research/observations of this matter?

Links are links. If links are internal to a site that doesn't mean they should be trusted less than external links.I think both have their own importance. In fact, your internal links are more likely to pass value in some form than any random external link. I don't think either you or the search engines really knows where that external link has been. It needs to go through a bit of filtration before it can pass value.
