Redirecting Blogspot To New Domain- Lose SEO or Not?

Quick question. I have a friend who has a client who has a blogspot. She's urging her to move away from blogspot, which I agreed with.

She said that she can redirect the blogspot to the new domain without losing SEO? Is this true? I remmeber reading something regarding this somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. If is this the case, what kind of redirect is this?

And if the blogspot gets deleted, then how could it be possible to retain SEO if the backlinks are pointing to the blogspot?

Thanks

I'm not 100% sure I understand your post.

Is this site a blogger blog hosted by blogspot or is it on their own server?

Is the change domain-specific only or are they going to move to a new CMS (like WordPress)?

    Sorry I wasn't more clear.

It's a blogger blog hosted by blogspot. This person wants to move the client over to a self-hosted WP. She said that she could simply do a permanent redirect to the new WP domain without losing SEO.

My question is: how is this possible since the Backlinks are pointing to the blogspot, or do they automatically point to the permanent redirect address. Secondly, wouldn't G just de-index the blogger since it's being redirected?

I have a feeling that I'm not being very clear again, but this results from my confusion! Thanks for your reply.

      Okay, I think I understand...

If I am right, here is the situation:

*Client has a blogger blog hosted by blogspot
*Client wants to have their own self-hosted WordPress blog on their own server and with their own domain name
*Existing content is to be moved to the new server

If this is accurate, here are my thoughts:

[1] I haven't personally done this before but I do believe it can be done. See this link for more info on redirecting the blogspot domain to the new one... Redirect Your Blogger Custom Domain to a WWW Subdomain

[2] You'll have to do some research as to how to migrate the content from blogspot over to WordPress but I know it can be done.

From an SEO/Traffic/Google PageRank perspective, you can expect that the newly created blog will lose some PageRank, rankings and traffic before it stabilizes (and then starts to improve).

I have seen several blogs do exactly what you are talking about and every one of them has lost PR and traffic for a period of time.

There is no way to know the specifics of what will occur but I would suggest you do some research as to what to expect and make sure the client knows this as well.

Having said that, I would suggest the move if the client were mine as well so I think the decision is a good one, just not one that will be completely "pain free."

      Good luck,
      Kevin

So... the next question is are they using the blogspot
domain name or their own with a redirect to the blog?

If they're currently using their own domain name redirected
to the blog they should be ok. If they're just using the blogspot
domain name I'm with you... don't know how that could work.

She is sitting pretty with a pr 6 and that many backlinks yeah you want to tread carefully to make sure nothing is lost, as far as SEO goes.

        Blogspot blogs rock.

The obvious answer, is: Don't do it.

        Leave it alone.

If the blog really has 20,000 + backlinks, PR6, you can't do much
        better than that.

Many, many people and businesses use blogspot for blogs.
And as this particular blog is proof, they rock.

There is no reason to move it. None whatsoever. I'd start
over with a new blog on a domain.

The PR will pass on a little, but over time it will not.

But seriously, PR 6? 20,000 backlinks? Who would suggest
        moving it?

I agree completely agree with Paul. It doesn't make sense to move it.

Even if it doesn't get updated very often it is far more valuable where it is.

Put some links in to a new WP blog to send the traffic on if future development is done on the WP platform.

If you can re-direct with a 301 permanent re-direct then there is no impact to SEO, aslong as you have a 301 for every page.

If you use a javascript re-direct then this will impack you negatively.

Redirecting blogspot to a new domain is ok if you are using 301 redirect.. You wont lose anything..SERP, backlinklinks, etc... unless your using javascript redirecting. thats bs..

    One question to all,
I was redirecting an blogger website to my affiliate link and got immediately banned from blogger. My blog was deleted. So,
If you are redirecting your blog to other website, will blogger will delete your blog?
    THanks..

When i moved my blogger to my own domain. I redirected it I think using the help of Google Webmasters using 301 redirect. Once I moved it over I noticed an increase of traffic and did a lot better ranking wise than I did with blogger

I agree with not moving it.

Leave the exisint blogspot blog up, and simply make you last post somethign along the lines of how because of the growth in traffic and popularity, and to better serve the community, you are moving to your own domain at [link].

Also put the link in your sidebar and edit your blog template to put the same sort of notice in your footer 'please join us as out new location: link'.

The only way to do a 301 (permanent) rediredct is server side, and you dont' have access to server site scripting in Blogspot. That means the only thing you can do is use a metatag refresh or a javascript redirect, which won't be permanent and won't pass PR.

The truth of it is if you have a PR6 blog, you should have ANY trouble getting it going on a new domain. If I had a PR6 to use to launch new sites, I would bee a cheery fellow.
