Brain Cramp - SEO for Existing Sites

It's tired, and I'm late. Wait...strike that, and reverse it.

I've got a friend with an existing site. Good content, good stuff (it's all about a particular service they offer in addiction recovery).

They've got good Adwords campaigns running well.

But they know nothing of SEO.

Now, I'm purdy good at building niche sites that are targeting a specific keyword phrase. I know how to do SEO for ONE phrase (and orient my entire site around that phrase, and then some related phrases).

What I'm stuck on is what to do for their site which isn't focused on just ONE phrase.

What I'd like to do is use Market Samurai or Keyword Elite to do some keyword research to find phrases they can pursue that would give them the biggest lift for the effort. In other words, find some low-hanging fruit...some easy keywords that they can successfully target for SEO (organic as opposed to Adwords), that will actually drive some traffic.

Like I said, typically I've used those tools to find a keyword phrase around which an entire site can be oriented. Now I need to work the other direction, and take an existing site and find the right keywords to pursue.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

    It shouldn't be too different.

The first thing is to do the research like you usually would - and then check their server logs to see what people are already finding them for.

Then just come up with a list of keywords and start with the ones most related to what they're already covering and work you way through to the newer ones.

As long as you have a list of keywords that you can focus new content and links on you just do the same as you normally would.

Andy's tip... to look for current keyword phrases in their stats is a great one!

In addition to that, you can run their url through Google's own keyword tool to find out what Google already believes their site is relevant for. Of course, this can also be done for their top competitor's sites to help you broaden your list.

After that, just try to optimize each page for a primary term (and maybe 1-2 sub-terms) and then go out and build some links to each page as you normally would.

        Thanks!

Their server logs are pretty bare...most people aren't finding their site via search right now. Hence, his asking me for help.

I totally blocked on using the Google Keyword Tool for SITE instead of keyword. Doh! Thanks for that!

I think that between his existing Adwords list and using the GKT for site (especially of competitors), I can come up with a pretty long list of keywords that would be relevant. The next part, though, is finding the best ones to pursue.

I know Market Samurai can analyze individual keywords for SEO competition. I just wish there was a way to take a long list and have them 'scored' based on first page results, without having to go through one at a time.
