What are the .US domains for?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if its ok to use .US domain for your sites or is it just for government sites? thank you!

    They are not a government extension and they are fine to use on your sites. In fact in some cases a .us can be very effective especially if your target audience is in the US. One example I can think of off the top of my head is the term football. If you had football.us it would make sense that someone would assume it to be a site about American Football, whereas as football in most other countries is what some here in the US consider soccer.

      thanks.. so there isn't really any difference between .com and .us, its just most of the domains with .com is taken.. thanks..

        .US domains are not allowed for international users. If you reside in USA, then you are allowed to register .US domains. For more information click here

      gov.cn
      gov.br

    .US domains actually did start out only belonging to government sites. But then it was opened up and allowed for US businesses to purchase .US domains at some point after the government agencies all made sure they got the sites they wanted.

    But there was the condition required that the business and/or person had to be in the US.

      I'm pretty sure the domains are not just for businesses.
