Stuck on page one, but not high enough? Have the best on page SEO you can? DO THIS. NO EXCUSES

Ok, many people around here are saying how they're stuck low on page one.

If you've already done the best on page SEO you can, your only option now is off page to get up in the list.

Here's WHAT I DO, to climb up page 1....When I feel like I'm stuck at the bottom of the page.

Keep in mind this doesn't work every time, but for many sites you can certainly pull a quick handful of links. I left an example of the scenario I recently used at the bottom of this thread, check it out to see what I mean.

I go to the FIRST result on the google search, my most competetive competitor. Let's say their domain is www.theirdomain.com

Ok so I'm at the bottom of page one because I don't have enough backlinks obviously...or just backlinks that are of high enough quality.

So take the number 1 competitor's domain...and do as follows.

In the google search bar, type this EXACTLY

linksto:www.theirdomain.com

What's going to come up is all of the websites linking back to your competitors domain. All of their backlinks

Simply go through the list, and get YOUR OWN link everywhere they have one if you can.

This can be time consuming...But if you peg away at the SAME backlinks the number 1 competitor has...You will surely rise up in rankings as well.

Yes it's true that 10+ pages of backlinks in the results can be overwhelming...."it's going to take me forever to get all those backlinks"

JUST DO IT. Rry to get like 10 of the same links they have per day, try to STEAL one page of results worth of backlinks each day.

If you really don't wanna do it, write down all of the websites linking to your competitors domain and outsource to have backlinks built at each website.

NO MORE EXCUSES to stay stuck at the bottom of page 1!

If you're already optimized well on page, get optimized off page...Spy on your competitors and climb up page 1.

Example.
Please excuse the spaces in domains as it's automatically parsing text with website descriptions when I type them in properly.

The keyword I'm trying to rise up in is ....custom exterior shutters....

The number one competitor is decorative shutters .com

If you type in linksto:decorative shutters .com
Not EVERY result will be a page you can get a direct link from, but look through them and you'll certainly find a handful.

Alot of the backlinks are require a reciprecal link.

So you can certainly get some quality links from this.

Add their link to your links page...and get a backlink in return. Check for a no follow tag first in their source code first.

I probably got about 10-12 backlinks between the first 2 pages for this particular scenario this morning.

Check out this specific scenario for yourself on google, it's a perfect example.

It's not a bad strategy to use, but...

Sorry, but no. It only shows a representative sample of their backlinks. Google intentionally cripples this command to keep things secret. Yahoo Site Explorer shows more links but still isn't accurate in count or in what Google is counting. You can get a partial list from these sources but sometimes key links are missing.

It depends a lot on where they got their links.

If they're getting them on their own web properties, especially their other authority sites like the icanhascheezburger network owners do, or from a lot of strong editorial links from top blogs and news organizations, then you won't be able to directly and easily duplicate their success. However, this does tell you that you'll have to develop your own authority network and/or obtain strong links to move forward with those keywords.

However, if they've engaged in a lot of blog commenting and profile linking and such, then you might stand a chance following this method.

I actually just did this. Yea alot of the sites you can't just hop on and grab a link, but alot of them you can.

For example the website I did this with this morning is custom exterior shutters .org

The number one competitor is decorative shutters .com

If you type in linksto:decorative shutters .com Alot of the backlinks are "link exchanges".

I probably got about 10-12 backlinks between the first 2 pages.

    Check it out.

I actually did this a while ago. All I was able to get were a few blog comments. I literally went through all of them.

Download SEO Spyglass and then this is a much more thorough and easier process.

Spyglass will scan from different databases and reveal many more links than you'll get shown from Google and it'll PR scan every page.

Find some pages ranking for competitive terms, plug them into Spyglass and you'll find plenty of great sources to obtain links.

Just keep pegging away. Keep looking for backlinks. Keep writing articles. Keep adding new posts/pages.

It takes alot of work to get to the top sometimes, I just thought getting a quick few backlinks from your competitors would be helpful to some....

I found that for the smaller, less comp niche keywords a few backlinks helps with that extra boost.

seems to be a lot of these types of posts on here recently.

"want to beat yer competitors, check their backlinks"

Is this not the first thing that anyone with the faintest knowledge of seo is going to do?

Alot of the backlinks are "link exchanges".

So you can certainly get some quality links from this. If you have nofollow tags on your outgoing links adding your reciprocal link to a links page doesn't really hurt your SEO.
Having (do)follow links isn't going to hurt your SEO either.

Plus, applying nofollow to your link exchanges is lame. You're just asking for them to remove your links when they find out that you've been screwing them over.

Aside from that, it's not a bad idea. Old news that's been covered a hundred times already. SEO Spyglass or Traffic Travis (for the poor) are the way to go with this. Get all of the relevant information upfront so you don't waste your time with crap and nofollow links.

I keep hearing about these mythical creatures that stay up top of the SERPS day in, day out, and do you know what? They're not mythical. They exist. I hear about sites with redirects and all sorts of sneaky tactics and their own networks providing the juice, but I've never got the real lowdown. I'm very gradually starting to cotton onto this.

All is not what it seems.

Sounds like everyone thinks I'm crazy for grabbing a few backlinks from the sites ranking higher than me.

All I was trying to accomplish with this post was the fact that as I did today, it has worked me up a couple spots in google for a couple sites in the past.

I personally think it's pretty convenient to find a handful of backlinks right from the SE. But I guess everyone's already doing it.
Not at all. Most of us are already digging through our competitors backlinks in search of gold.

It's a very smart idea and does exactly what you claim.

Nevermind all of us, we are just old and jaded.

Once you take this method and mix in SEO Spyglass you'll have a Holy Cow moment and go absolutely bonkers scraping up your competitors and everybody elses great backlinks. BTW, I still primarily use Traffic Travis since it's faster but it doesn't dig as deep as SEO Spyglass, so the people unwilling or unable to buy SEO Spyglass still have a free alternative.
