Large retailer competition

Do any of you go after the large retail marketers (Amazon, Target, etc.) if they appear on the first results page? How easy is it to compete with these sites if you're attacking long-tail keywords?

      It depends. Sometimes if the product is red hot and a big seller, Amazon and co do maximum SEO on it. If its a mid range or not the top sellers they don't bother too much.

      Best to check out page rank and backlinks.

      An example of a competitive keyword is 'sat nav'. Amazon is ranked no. 1, with a PR of 7 for the page and 3000+ backlinks. I think lots of people buy satellite navigation systems on the net.
