Google forced to reveal Adsense rev share

Not sure if this is the first time this happens or not, however the Italian Antitrust Authority has sentenced against Google in that it MUST notify publishers of how ACTUALLY the CPC is paid, and what is the percentage etc etc

Myself along with a few other webmasters are also preparing a sort of class action suit to be filed with the same Authority about the illegal and arbitrary Adsense accounts closures

Will keep you posted

illegal and arbitrary Adsense accounts closures
Arbitrary I can agree with at times but illegal? Doesn't their TOS state that they can shut down your account for pretty much any reason they want? It is their program, after all.

Yes it is their program, except once it is in my account , it is also MY MONEY that we are talking about
if TOS are against prevalent LAW then
        1) they are irrelevant
        2) they are illegal

Indeed, though that does not make it legal.

Before jumping on bash/sue google train - look up the case the OP mentions and you'll find it's a specific group of news publishers claiming their publications are not getting proper coverage by google.

True, however that is PART of the case, the other part (it is in the same document and also here) is that in the course of THAT case, the authority has determined that Google has to disclose how payout percentages are calculated for Adsense publishers accounts. This was actually offered by Google itself as a gesture of good faith to avoid higher penalties in the case brought by the National Publishers Association of Italy

I think this is great news, its about time publishers started to get a little upper hand. Google has always called the shots, and sometimes not rightly so.

This should be great for publishers

Adsense account closed with no explanation whatsoever. They refused to give details.
I have had the adsense account for many years, never did anything with it. Once I decided to take advantage of it, I made $76 in one month. I guess they figured this sudden jump in earning cannot be legitimate. However, the site that made me that much money is the site I promoted on adwords. I contacted them asking them to see that the traffic is coming from adwords, after all they are both google services and they can easily see it.
They closed the account, kept my earnings and still charged me $45 for the adword traffic I used to generate that income.
Over all my profit was $30 (that is if they paid me) but instead it cost me time and money.
The worst part is their refusal to give an explanation, it was the attitude of we are google, we do whatever we want.

What was the primary function of your website?

If it was to make money from Adsense, then Google will have considered you to be engaging in Adwords-Adsense arbitrage (trying to profit from the difference between what you pay for a web visitor and how much you receive each time they click).

I don't recall which ToS I read recently, but Google certainly stated that leveraging their systems for arbitrage is not allowed.

Well, let's see. Did you ever hear one of those "Stupid Criminal" reports on Jay Leno, where a drug dealer calls the police because someone took his stash?

You yourself just reported how you operated in defiance of Google published TOS, but you're now angry over the way they enforced those TOS? Every Google publisher is engaged in a private contract between themselves and Google ... making a legal case out of it doesn't seem to have much Return On Investment. No matter who wins, only the lawyers get rich.

This is a thought from someone who has both sued and been sued ... either way the judge rules, you wind up losing something.

Why not think about how much more you could do with this time and experience building more paying sites using some other monetization tool? Just a thought, and it'll keep your blood pressure/stress level lower too ..

By the way, this is for the information of anyone reading this, I do remember reading somewhere that you can not use Adwords to drive traffic to a page that runs Adsense (Google ToS somehow). I don't know whether the reading was authentic, but that makes sense to me because then you could buy cheap traffic with Adwords and send it to expensive-keywords page (in theory) for Adsense, Google to bleed. This may be the reason that you were unfortunately banned (and I may be wrong on this of course).

You could be right. I read somewhere that you can't have adsense on your landing page on adwords but you can put it on other pages within your site.

If you think this is good, think again.
Google has $25 billion in the bank (and growing)
          Lawsuits are not a problem.

But getting back to whether you think this is good.
Why? So google will ban you quicker? Or change their
TOS so that you can't even apply?

Not sure why people speak out of both sides of their mouths.
Oh bad google! Oh but please pay me! I can't live without you!
But I sure hope you suffer!

The result is they will crack down even harder on fools
and their adsense accounts, although the mentioned lawsuit
has nothing do with much of anything to anyone here.

I'll bet google on a daily basis, as all large companies, gets
slapped with a ton of lawsuits. Does not mean they are wrong
or evil. If you think google is evil, distance yourself as far away
          as possible.

I think Microsoft had a nice fat bank account too, didn't they? Yet they had to comply with EU Antitrust rulings AND cough up nice fines. One of the parties to this is effectively a national state, via the AntiTrust Authority, so finding lawyers and dragging things forever is not an issue here. Italy is where a few Google executives have been sentenced to jail a few months ago.. And no Google is not evil, except it thinks laws and regulations are a nuisance, especially when others are trying to force THEM to comply. Of course then they cry out about transparency when China tries to kick them in the balls...

You must be somebody google slapped.
Google has slapped a whole host of countries.
              Maybe your country is next.

Google is still in China. Never left.
Many provinces can get google, and anyone
else who wants to can get it quite easily.
I'd say it was google who kicked them back in

Google fears nobody. Their android phone

Lawsuits against MS help google. Just wait until
their chrome OS gets into a few computers.
Google is light years ahead of anybody on
cloud computing which is the wave of the future.

If you rely on google, you better want good things
to happen to them. Not bad.

MS still has a nice fat bank account. They made a couple
of more billions in profit than google last quarter.

Spilling hot coffee on your lap, suing, winning, does
              not make McDonalds evil either.

As stated, google will only get tougher against
more people, more sites, and more countries.

How about if google pulled the plug on adsense users
in Italy? Would that make you feel better?

There's a lot of countries on google's bad list.

LOL ok, you are a priest of the almighty Google religion. I won't argue with you. Whatever Google does is good, whoever complains about Google must be bad or evil or have a hidden agenda (like Google doesn't have one...) .
BTW, I didn't say Google is evil, I said maybe they will be forced to stop arbitrary and illegal actions. And, I know this may sound like a shock to some folks on the other side of the ocean, but Europe is almost as big a market as the US, and they can't just 'slap' a whole country without consequences on their whole EU operations. The online advertising biz was worth about 15 billion USD in 2008, I don't think Google would want to drop its share of that? How would they SELL ads if they blocked adsense publishers??
It's funny, some people seem to think that 'the world needs Google' , while I am more inclined to think that 'Google needs the world', or they can't sell their stuff to anybody, can they?

I'm not the priest of google. Just sticking to what this forum
is really about, mostly. Adsense, adwords, and google.

On a daily basis, if you would care to read, google buys this or
google partners with that. On a daily basis. They get
slapped by lawsuits as well. Comes with the territory.
Today, MS settled up. Did you complain that they just
shelled out $200 million to settle? Course not. People
who don't like google should refuse to do anything with
                  them. Period.

Maybe you did not listen to any news today. Youtube celebrates
5 years. And they own the market. Not just own it. Dominate
it. Dominate it like only google could. 2 billion views a day.

Those who choose to use google will succeed. Those who
don't will be picking up bread crumbs from other programs.

This forum is about making money. Choose to, or choose
not to. The choice is yours.

                  Paul

Hahaha...Google's stuck in an Italian lawsuit. They'll grow old and die before they get out of that one XD I've heard the Italian legal system is hell!

I really hope all this goes somewhere. They really need to hold up their end of the bargain with their Adsense advertisers, not get their ads displayed for free because they can pull the plug whenever they like. This is people's money; there has to be something illegal going on here.

as for Adwords feeding into Adsense, I got a postcard offer from Google after I had opened up my Adsense account--offering me $100 free to start an Adwords account under my same name! I can't see that using both for one site can violate their TOS.

ultimately I chose not to do it--Adwords didn't pay off for me. But I thought I should bring up that they offered me that.

The problem is that Google is big enough that if countries push legal action they move out - just like they did with China. Google's main income is 87% in the states (another 10% in Canada and another 8% in the UK) where they are legally untouchable due to their huge monetary stature. I wish you luck but dont expect to much.

It is impossible to get hold of a human being in their company to speak with on account of monetary issues and I've never had that issue with ANY other company I'm involved with moneywise. Free services yes, but not money. {And I've interacted with real humans more on the free sites too!}

Will the filings in Italy effect other markets as well? It has always bothered me that Google fails to disclose the shared percentage amount.
